Ever since I've been diagnosed with Celiacs (the bloodwork came back Monday, confirming that I do), I've had a number of people mention Elisabeth Hasselbeck to me. It's a shame that the "face" of my condition is a rightwing nutjob, but oh well. All kidding aside, what really stands out to me about her problems versus mine is how long it took to get a diagnosis. It took her eight years to find a doctor who could diagnose her correctly.
I've probably had a mild form of Celiacs for most of my life; and it being the baseline, I never really noticed it until the condition became much worse, as a complication of other issues. But once I did notice it, and complained of the symptoms to my doctor, on the very first visit he poked my abdomen a bit, asked me a couple questions, and said "Hmm, maybe celiac sprue." Ten minutes, and I had the correct diagnosis. If you ever need a doctor is the Bucks County / Philadelphia area, I really could not recommend
Dr. Kipp highly enough.
