Short Attention and Hobbies

Jul 23, 2010 10:38

I have a short attention span. I don't mean like ADHD/ADD, I mean my attention span runs about a month to a few years on hobbies. That may be why they are classified as hobbies. My hobbies include:
  • Playing Guitar
  • Song Writing
  • Making Smoked Meats (rare)
  • Making Beer
  • Surfing
  • Working out
  • Running
  • Reading (Far too rare)
  • Gardening/landscaping
  • Carpentry
There are so many that I lose track, and often just get lazy. I then feel regretful for neglecting one or another. Right now I'm not inclined to surf (the summer flatness is not the issue), I'd have to admit, it's really fun, but since I broke my finger doing it, I'm just a bit gun shy. The frustrating part is that it is amazing exercize, far better than the runnign i've been doing.
Making beer continues to be great fun. I think the fact that it covers so many stimulation points, creative, scientific, ego-maniacal, generosity, taste, smell, style. I'm on that one, and it takes only occasional effort.
Guitar, my guitar and songwriting are highly neglected. I'll pick up the guitar for a half hour every week about, but play mostly stuff I already know, and not even try to work on my chops. I plateaud about 3 years ago in my playing and it's stagnant. I rarely get booked for shows, I've not written a song in nearly 2 years. I am not driven towards it, but I feel remorse for it.

Maybe other people are like this. I like to try everything get reasonably good and move on. I never do it on purpose, but looking back it's a bit of pattern. As usual, as I write, I feel better about it. I do things that interest me, I explore and try new things. It's an interesting life.

The Barleywine was bottled this week, the Blasphemy Brew is in secondary, and I may go surfing tomorrow, so there!

surf, homebrew, beer
