I'm on a bus headed to Birmingham,Alabama for a conference. If I were driving, I'd really be loving this. But as a passenger I just want to get there. I don't enjoy the passivity of being along for the ride.
When I was a boy, though, it had to be different. I remember lying in the back seat watching power lines rise and fall, rise and fall, rise and fall as trees flew past in a green blur. Then, when the world was big and I was small, I was okay being along for the ride. It was safe, closed, objective and the sun seemed to follow me home.
