WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A junior at the College of William & Mary died early Friday after he climbed onto a steep, dew-covered roof four stories up and fell off.
Zachary James Vaughan, 21, of Williamsburg, and another student climbed out the window of a fourth-floor game room at about 5:50 a.m., police said. The roof was steep and slippery, and campus police arrived to find Vaughan already dead after slipping.
Police have ruled the incident an accident, college spokesman Brian Whitson said.
Vaughan, a graduate of Bethel High School in Hampton, was a government major and was active on campus while considering attending law school, vice president of student affairs Sam Sadler wrote in an e-mail sent to all students. The e-mail said Vaughan was active in several political and service organizations on campus and was well-liked.
It was not immediately clear if alcohol was a factor, Whitson said.
doesn't seem real does it? It just keeps hitting us closer and closer. Rest in peace Zach.
