My ISP is set up to use Netscape, and converting it to IE looks like Hell on Earth. However, I use Netscape 4.7 and it's refusing to handle accents lately and is otherwise being a PITA ( Read more... )

Having recently faced the same dilemma, here's my $.02:

Netscape 7.0 is apparently very good. However, Netscape has been assimilated by the AOLTimeWarnerYaddayaddayadda Borg (I think ;-), which means that N7.0 is very, very ad-heavy and Borg-biased. Or so I have read in the reviews.

Have you considered using Mozilla? Mozilla is the open-source project that develops the Neat Stuff which is later incorporated into Netscape. It's just like Netscape (really!), only a bit more advanced, and minus the ads. It's pretty easy to set personal preferences -- including the Classic Netscape skin, which I find very easy to use.

I think I was using Netscape 6.0 before I switched, and the upgrade really was seamless. It's always worth backing up your browser files, of course, just in case things go pear-shaped, but I had no problems at all. (Except the traditional one of, "But it's not the _same_!!!")

Thanks for this! Work suddenly appeared again in avalanche-like quantities, so although I've got Netscape 7 successfully onto a (virgin) laptop without problems, I still have to try and install it alongside the old version on this one. But yes, all files and addresses, etc. backed up ( ... )
