partially x-posted from Bitches:

Did anyone watch the documentary on god/religion last night on CBS? It was called "In God's Name", and while the hook was about terrorism, 9/11, etc, it was primarily cuts of a quite incredible roster of religious leaders giving their personal perspective on god, religion, life in general.  Actually, when it first started, I was all "thanks, 9/11 is just what we need on the holiday weekend.  Nice."  But actually, it really was kind of good timing.  Why they didn't advertise it at all, I don't know - if it hadn't come on right after TAR, I never would have heard of it. Given the centrality of religion to so much of what is going on in the world today, and the incredible line-up the film makers pulled together, it's the kind of thing that should probably get a much higher profile.  Seriously, check out the interviewees:

* Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Orthodox Church
* Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi), a Hindu spiritual leader
* Pope Benedict XVI, head of the Roman Catholic Church
* The Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso), spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists
* Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah, a prominent Shi'ite Muslim leader
* Bishop Mark Hanson, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and President of the Lutheran World Federation
* High Priest Michihisa Kitashirakawa, Daiguji (Shinto Priest) of the Grand Shrine of Ise
* Rabbi Yona Metzger, Chief Rabbi of Israel, Ashkenazi
* Dr. Frank Page, President of the Southern Baptist Convention
* Imam Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi, Sheikh of Al-Azhar and a prominent Sunni Muslim leader
* Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the Sikhs' highest authority
* Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England

How they pulled all that off, I have no clue.  It was quite fascinating, and very personal - you get a real sense of the individuals, not just the roles, and their personal struggles and challenges.  If they re-air it, it's definitely worth catching. [link]  I'd like to sit down and watch it again when we're not also doing things like tree decorating, but I think the Tivo will have cut off the last half hour (damn CBS and their inability to manage their Sunday night schedule.)
