Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great?
Katchoo/David/Francine/lotsa other people (Strangers in Paradise)

Dudes who draw anime and superheroes take note! It IS possible to draw sexy female characters without making them all look like clones!

This series does a good job of capturing what it’s like to be torn between more than one love interest without feeling like a bad harem anime or making any of Katchoo's lovers out to be the “bad/wrong one”.

One of the best scenes in the series is when Casey (Katchoo’s rebound lover after Francine goes back to Brad) chews Francine out for being a “boomerang”. Before that scene, I hated that Katchoo ended up turning to Casey and didn’t know what Moore was thinking when he shoved them together. But after that, I could see what Katchoo might have seen in Casey (and it was our first clue that Casey wasn’t the nymphomaniac dumbass that she appeared to be up until that point)
Personally, I kinda wanted Katchoo to stay with David (not because I dislike Francine; I just thought they were better for each other) and I was VERY sad when he ended up dying and writing her a letter begging her to forgive Francine and take her back. RIP David :(

Francine, Katchoo, and David at Comic Con: This picture has nothing to do with the canon story. I just think it's cute.

Day 24 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out badly?
Jerrica/Rio/Jem/Riot (Jem and the Holograms)

I still can’t believe a romance this messed up was marketed to little girls! The 1980s were a wacky time, weren’t they? This music video sums up Jerrica/Jem and Rio’s screwy relationship quite nicely (keep in mind, the blond woman and the pink-haired chick are the same person):

For those unfamiliar with Jem and the Holograms, I’ll attempt to explain this relationship to you...
This is Jerrica Benton:

Jerrica Benton inherited some kickass hologram earrings from her genius father that allow her to live a double life as both the CEO of her late father's music company and as a glamorous rock star named Jem:

Because of legal “conflict of interest” issues, Jerrica can’t tell the world that she and Jem are the same person. So only her closest friends and family (and, later on, the President of the United States) know the secret. Problem is, Jerrica never gets around to telling her boyfriend Rio Pacheo:

Or, as I like to call him, "Twoface MacManwhore"

Jerrica keeps saying she’s waiting for the right time to let him know. But in the mean time, Rio is dating both Jerrica and Jem. He does this openly! And aside from occasionally singing a rockin’, "take that, asshole" song about her predicament via Jem...

…Jerrica doesn’t complain all that much about the fact that her boyfriend is kinda cheating on her. This Jem/Jerrica/Rio melodrama is part of the core basis for the show. Which is pretty ridiculous considering most of Jerrica’s romantic stress would disappear if she just told him. And she never produces a good reason NOT to tell him! What’s worse is that Rio is written as having a firey temper (there’s one infamous scene where he kicks over one of Jerrica’s potted plants after accusing her of keeping secrets from him); which gives the disturbing implication that Jerrica might be keeping the secret out of fear the Rio might beat her up! Yikes! O_o

Jerrica is a schizophrenic nutbag, so I can’t really blame her for acting weird. Rio, on the other hand, has no excuse. He’s a cheating, borderline abusive douchebag. And it served him right when Jem starting flirting with this dude named Riot:

"That's right ladies. I used THREE cans of hairspray to get my hair to look like this!"

"Excuse me, sir? Aren't you the villain from Labyrinth?"

Good God, Riot! Not even the 80s can excuse an outfit that hideous!!! O_O

"Sorry, Rio. Gaudy fashion and ridiculous hair is my fetish and you're just not cutting it for me anymore!"

Riot is just as much of a cad as Rio; but at least he’s honest about it. And he’s the first person in the show to tell Jem that if she were Jerrica’s friend she’d stop humiliating her by making out with her boyfriend in front of the paparazzi. No one else ever pointed out this glaringly obvious detail and hearing Riot say it almost made up for the fact that his intro episode resulted in Pizzazz (the show’s previous main antagonist) getting neutered! Behold Riot in all of his campy glory:

Jem and the Holograms never resolved this love polygon despite the fact that it had a definitive "finale episode". Part of me thinks it would be cool to see this show reserrected with a reboot (the original series creator/head writer Cristy Marx has said that she's VERY interested doing a modern reboot of Jem). But considering the kind of musical garbage that's marketed to young girls these days; I think I'd be happier if Jem stayed in the Outrageous 1980s. She and her pals fit in better there anyway.
