A lot of it stems from the culture that American Christianity has created. If there's one thing American Christianity excels at it's being reactionary. Often the things being reacted against are science, logic, well-formed arguments, and quality. And of course, trying to legislate the US into becoming the "Christian Nation" it never was. It's unfortunate that the face Christianity shows to the nation is all too often close-minded, judgmental, and often ignorant.
I'm not very familiar with Christianity Today or any of their blogs, but it sounds like they are writing to the reader, which is rarely a good way to produce quality content. It's the fan fiction problem: narrowly-focused, lacking real conflict, and written to a pre-determined outcome.
From what I've heard, Christianity Today does a good job with their print edition. But once you get into anything at all to do with blogging apparently without much editorial oversight it's a crap shoot. And then you're in for the joys of the non-corporate web. Searching a landfill trying to find a decent sandwich.

YES. The blogging doesn't have the same degree (or any?) of research and documentation, although I know there is an editor b/c my friend has to submit her work to someone for posting. At least I think...
Even if a blog IS very opinionated about a moral issue, which is totally a valid use of a blog, I think it needs to be written from a personal perspective that shows the writer's passion. When it's that and written as a journalistic news piece, I want to see documentation and sources. And then it's become something different. I think a lot of bloggers want to do both and end up making a mess of things.
