I'm not usually one to pimp a Broadway show. Not because some of them aren't incredible, but because a) I don't live in NYC and b) shows have gotten so damned expensive. I mean, I already think ticket prices at small houses in LA are bad enough -- to say nothing of seeing a show at the Geffen, ouch. Broadway is out and out robbery. Most of the time.
Right now, however, I'm going to go against what would normally be my instinct to say: wait for a tour, or a DVD of performances, or a PBS special, or even the movie. I'm going to wholeheartedly state: If you find yourself going to NYC anytime between now at Labor Day weekend, get your ass to see
One Man, Two Guvnors. I saw the NT Live screening in LA some months back, and I have honestly, seriously never laughed so hard in my entire life. I went with three mature, poised, very grown-up actor friends, and we were all ecstatic when intermission came only because we were all in danger of no longer being able to breathe. It is really that funny. The show is sharp, witty, ridiculous, sweet, raucous, and has some of the best physical humour I've seen on stage.
We all need more laughter in life, and this show will do it for you. If I find any buckets of cash lying around in the next few months, I am spending it on this. As should you.
