Let's go to the movies!

Sorry I've been rather absent lately - I've been reading, but I haven't had anything to say!

But now: I've been to see Tron. Not worth the $15 for the 3D, but pretty awesome nonetheless. Would've been much better if I'd only had a rudimentary understanding of English, though.

Heh, my friend invited me, and I had nothing else to do, so I went!

Yes: get the soundtrack (which is apparently ALL Daft Punk), and find some way to watch that one scene, because that's really the only thing worth seeing.

No, that scene's stupid. The light-cycle scene. It's kind of like this scene from the teaser trailer (which has nothing to do with the actual movie), except longer and cooler and with more people.

I feel like declaring yourself a sci-fi fan is akin to declaring yourself a feminist - according to the definitions, I know a great many people that would fit both categories, but they both have so many negative connotations with the general public that people try to distance themselves from those labels.

Which is horribly frustrating, especially when only 3-4 people in a class of 30 honors cultural anthropology undergrads will admit that they are feminists. *feels like punching people*

I've been wanting to go see the new Tron, though, if only for the shiny and for the nostalgia (my mom practically raised me on the original, and then it was in Kingdom Hearts as well...)

Ooh, good point! And I can't believe that ratio in an anthropology class. Considering I spent most of my senior seminar anthro class wanting to punch my classmates for going too far in the opposite direction and spewing a lot of bull (the reason I never stuck with cultural anthro is because it seems to me that at least 50-75% is completely made up. With archaeology, it's only like 25%), that's so bizarre to me. And awful. Wow.

I've never actually encountered that situation in a conversation, but I have a comeback prepared: "Yes, I'm a feminist. I believe women are equal to men and should be treated as such. Do you disagree?" Which, yes, ignores a lot of the issues on the matter, but does cut straight to the heart of it while making the person laughing at you look like a HUGE flailing idiot and bigot.

Tron WAS awfully shiny. Very, very pretty. And yes! If you loved the original, you should absolutely go! You are exempt from my reaction that it's not worth the money. :P

It was a really disheartening ratio. It made me incredibly depressed. And yeah, I like cultural anthro classes because I can bullshit my way through it, and hate the field for the same reason.

And yes, that is one of my favorite responses when people say that! And if they do rebut with something about how I am oversimplifying, I can usually at least engage them in some sort of intelligent discussion.

Oooh, hooray! I guess it'll have to wait, though - I leave for Japan in 30 hours!
