I'm loving watching the Olympics. It's funny how I cheer for the Americans, but ultimately, I don't really care. They're just a celebration of humanity, of what humans can do with determination and dedication, the strength and courage and beauty we can achieve. It's amazing. And this is why I'm glad we didn't pull out of them. Well, that, and it's not fair to the athletes, most of whom have spent their entire lives training for this one thing and might only get this one shot (especially in sports like swimming or gymnastics, where your career is over by the time you're 25-28. 30-year-olds in swimming are old, and unheard of in gymnastics). I do think they probably should have held it somewhere else, but if the world couldn't be bothered to do that, then we've got to partake in this universal celebration of humanity. It's funny how international lines become hyperimportant, and then not important at all, during the Olympics.
Swimming is one of my favorite things to watch, because it's a sport that I understand really well. Michael Phelps confuses the hell out of me: why does he wear two caps? How in the world is he so fast with that stroke? (Watch him in freestyle: his rhythm is bizarre, he breathes every stroke, his cycle is really slow. And yet his feet go like mad and he beats EVERYONE. I don't understand, but its amazing.)
I also love gymnastics, and sometimes wish I were a foot shorter and flexible. But you know what's really cool? One of the US girls is my classmate. I don't actually know her (and couldn't really pick her out of lineup), but she's kind of a big deal. So it's cool to see her on TV, and to actually know what she looks like. :P
