So today, in my Death in the Ancient World class, we learned about sarcophagi, whose name, as you may know, literally translates to "flesh eater". I always thought this was just some morbid and fantastic wordplay, but as it turns out, it's true: the lime content in many marble sarcophagi eats away at flesh. A high-lime sarcophagus can reduce a body to bones in ONE WEEK.
Taking bets: who thinks this'll come up before the end of this season of Bones? (The odds are good: whenever odd or obscure facts about skeletons come up in one of my classes, it's usually either been mentioned on an episode (like the Wari, and then my reaction is OMGTRUFAX) or it is soon after. I don't recall an episode where lime played a factor in decay; feel free to correct me, if you remember better!)
(Guys, the weather is gorgeous today. It makes me so happy. Also, my TA who is obsessed with me (from my Death class, ironically) told me he liked the paper I handed in last week, which probably means I got a good grade (which is good, because I liked it too). If I didn't have four midterms in the next week and a half, life would be fantastic. Now, it's great but stressful.)
bones,
