My frustration with Scully's inevitably improper-for-breaking-and-entering attire combined with
this fic (which is brilliant - thanks,
severuslovesme - even though Scully is tremendously out of character (it's in a good way)) led me to create this:
The Ultimate Breaking and Entering Emergency Kit
1. Lightweight black turtleneck, for hiding in dark shadows. Sleeves can be pushed up if too hot; turtleneck not essential (especially in hot climates), but helpful.
2. Black jeans. Durable, tough, and difficult to see.
3. Rubber-soled shoes. Lightweight, good for sneaking (unlike heels, which make lots of noise, SCULLY), perfect for running (again, unlike heels, which could make you break an ankle).
4. Gloves. For the fingerprints.
5. Good flashlight. Not a wimpy small yellowish one that barely illuminates anything (like we have in my household), but a good strong bright one. Just be careful where you point it. Also, something to stash it in when you're not using it, because walking around holding a flashlight when you don't need it is really annoying (I went hiking to a cave recently; I know).
6. Lockpick kit. Because the door/drawer you need to open will inevitably be locked.
7. Knife. For cutting things or last-ditch self-defense.
8. Ankle holster (for those authorized to carry guns): won't get in the way or caught on things, harder to see than shoulder or belt holsters. Perhaps a little more difficult to reach, but the concealment factor is important. If you're worried, you can also carry a more easily accessible gun as well.
9. A clear idea of what you're looking for. Please, people. Don't just go in and wander around; people could show up any minute! Also, know where you're going. A map, if it's a large industrial/goverment building.
There you go. If you live a life in which you have lots of unexpected break-ins, carry it in your car. Pack it on business trips, and carry it in the rental car. Even if you don't have time to change, at least grab the more portable elements and change your shoes (shoes, people. Perhaps the most important item on this list).
Any additions?
(I put way too much thought into this, didn't I? Oh well. It's fun!)
