Hurray! Its shark week, I might try to give you a summary of each day, we will see. Man, I need to go shark cage diving. So fucking awesome. Who wants to go to South Africa with me? Dude I might actually have to move there post-Philippines. Natal Shark Board research center in Durbin. Today Mike Rowe of the "dirty jobs" on discovery channel got to cage dive, then do a tiger shark autopsy, helps tag sharks, then he tested out a shark repellent. Sharks are so cool. (Sorry for the abstract post, I am trying to watch and prepare for a stats mid term). eew shark livers often account for 25% of the animals mass. Its where they store all their fat. this liver weighs 40lbs/17.6kg, hee hee and Mike Rowe can't lift it very easily. They dont chew their meals so they have incredibly strong stomach muscles to help digest everything. This week is going very well, last time I watched it they were like "ooh cool monsters!" this time they are a little more conservation minded and I appreciate that. Sharks can sense blood from 2 miles away. Funny sex jokes about their 2 claspers (penis) making them "great" whites followed of course by strategically placed "chum" camera shots.
Commercial Break:
Live Giant Squid caught on camera next Saturday at 8pm
Last year 100 million sharks were killed by humans.
Awesome, now we go to Bimini, and the world's "premier" shark lab. Shark repellent is made from the smell of dead sharks; the sharks are "donated" by local fishers. Cool they put a canister of the shark repellent into an air gun then they can shoot it out into the water to scare the sharks away. But to test it, they chum the water with a bunch of chopped up fish bits, THEN JUMP IN THE WATER WITH THEM. But luckily the shark repellent works great and the sharks scatter in all directions. That is about it for this show he also sat up on a cliff with an creepy "shark watcher" who stares at all the people on the beach.
~370 species of sharks. 50,000 die per day.
Next up is 10 deadliest species of sharks, but they play this one every year. So I will do my studying now...
