jessicasonline Pete had only thought about marrying Patrick three times in his life. Now that he thinks about it, it should have been more.
The first time was when he first heard Patrick sing, which he thinks is pretty ironic because back then he wasn't even aware he was madly in love with Patrick yet. It was nothing special. They had been sitting in Pete's basement, and Pete finally convinced Patrick to sing
for him. They were sitting Indian style across from each other. Pete remembers how Patrick always looked so young and vulnerable back then, and his performance was far from perfect. Patrick's guitar was slightly out of tune and he was barely audible because he was singing
so softly. That's the setting Pete liked to hear Patrick in best. When his strings were buzzing every now and then, when he could hear every slide and Patrick was mumbling a little because he was shy. Even though Patrick had been awkward and introverted for the whole thing, Pete's first thought was about how he could listen to that voice
everyday of his life for the rest of forever.
The second time was during a thunder storm. Pete hates thunder storms, always has always will. This one happened while they were driving and they hadn't reached a rest stop yet. Since it was also four in the morning, they were basically the only ones on the road. Who would want to be out driving in a thunderstorm at four in the morning? Not Pete. Pete's twisted logic was also not letting him sleep. He was too afraid being the only ones on the road would increase their chances of getting struck by lightning. He wasn't sure if it was true, but he did not want to find out.
He crawled out of his bunk and paced back and forth at the front of the bus a few times. He drank three glasses of water, peed, then stood around, out of things to do. Lightning illuminated the bus and a giant crack of thunder followed after. Pete suddenly felt very alone standing there by himself, so he retreated back to the bunks. Before he was able to get back in his bunk, a hand shot out from the bunk next to him, grabbed his wrist, and nearly gave him a heart attack. Patrick was pulling at Pete's hand and mumbling, so Pete squished into the bunk with him. Patrick threw his arm around Pete and pulled him closer, even though Pete was practically in his skin.
"Go so sleep Pete. Everything will be fine."
Just like that, Pete's whole body immediately relaxed. While listening to Patrick's breathing and inhaling his scent, he realized he would never be afraid of another thunder storm again if he could sleep next to Patrick every night.
The last time was when he came home one night. He walked in the door and he could see Patrick kneeling on the kitchen floor, filling Hemingway's food bowl. Pete walked further into the room and Patrick looked up, smiled, and said, "Hey, how was your day?" It was such a
simple sentence, nothing special at all, but it made Pete freeze. He looked down at Patrick, in his kitchen, asking him how his day was. Pete's chest swelled, he couldn't catch his breath and he thought his heart was going to beat out of his rib cage. He wanted to come
home every night and have Patrick there, feeding the dog, or watching TV, or doing anything, and stopping to ask him how his day was. Pete was suddenly on the floor in front of Patrick. He grabbed his face and kissed him long and hard, with as much passion as he could muster. When Pete pulled away, Patrick took a minute to breathe, face flushed
and lips swollen, before he asked, "What was that for?"
"Um, I don't know," Pete answered, running his finger along Patrick's
cheek, "for just...breathing?"
Patrick looked at Pete with confusion. "Pete, what are you-"
"Marry me?"
Patrick snapped his mouth shut and stared at Pete wide eyed.
Pete realized how stupid that was, and if he had any chance of getting Pat to marry him, he probably just blew it. Oh well, he got himself into this, he might as well plead his case and make it good. He really, really needed 'Trick to say yes.
Patrick was about to say something when Pete clamped his hand on his
mouth. "Just listen to me. I want you to marry me. I want to listen to your voice all day long every single day, no matter what you're using it for. Talking, singing, humming, whatever. I want to come home and find you here, asking me how my day was. I want you to protect me from thunderstorms-"
"What do thunder storms have to do with this?" Patrick asked, removing
Pete's hand from his mouth.
"Nothing. Everything. Just...ugh, I don't know." Pete ran his hands through Patrick's hair, down his face, onto his shoulders and back up again. Pete was beaming inside because along with all of Patrick's favorite things, he also knew his outline by heart. "I just… I need… you need to… ugh. I just need you to say yes. Please, please, please, 'Trick." Pete dropped his hands from Patrick. He sat there with the most desperate and worried expression Patrick had ever seen. Patrick pulled Pete in and kissed him lightly on the lips.
"You're such an idiot sometimes." Patrick told him.
Pete put his hands on Patrick's waist, "Does that mean you're saying
yes?" he asked, faced still etched with worry.
Patrick rolled his eyes and smiled. "Like I could ever say no." Patrick pulled Pete in for a real kiss, but Pete pulled away.
"Say it, 'Trick. I believe you, I just need to hear it."
Patrick smiled. "You're such a dork. Yes, Pete, I'll marry you."
So, Pete was wrong. He thought about marrying Patrick four times. He also realized he wanted to watch the smile form on Patrick's face, and be called a dork for the rest of forever.
