Summary: Demi becomes obsessed with a girl she's only met in passing. She doesn't know the girl's name, where she lives or goes to school; all she knows is that she's perfect.
A/N: Uhm, hey! Um, so it's been, uh, a month now? Oops? Would y'all still be mad at me if I said I just had too many great fics to read? 'Cuz I'm talking about y'alls. So, technically, i's y'alls fault! You're to blame!!! LOL, so if anyone's even still interested in this story anymore, here's chapter 9...
Selena
Sure she left the car haughtily, and walked up to the door with attitude, but once she was indoors, Selena burst into tears and ran up the stairs as fast as she could.
She didn’t let herself sob until her face was buried in a pillow. She didn’t want her mom (or worse, Brian) to come running at the sight or sound of her distress. Psh, yeah right.
Now, Selena had been rejected before, of course, but those times were only with girls she didn’t know; they were just strangers Selena had thought were cute.
Which, technically, Demi was, too, but it was different this time. It wasn’t just a stupid crush… but it was worse than that, wasn’t it?
It was unrequited love.
It had to be. Demi must have been playing some game when she said she was interested. She was probably calling Miley right now, laughing about the stupid girl she’d gotten to fall for her… and didn’t catch before she hit rock bottom.
Selena jumped from the bed and ran to the window, looking down to the driveway. The empty driveway. She’d left.
Damnit, every time she got her hopes up about this girl, her heart was crushed. This was twice now. How many more times would it happen?
None. Nope. Never again. Selena would get over Demi. It was that simple.
Except it wasn’t.
Selena didn’t even know if she wanted to get over her. Even if she did, she didn’t think it would be happening any time soon. And it wouldn’t be the same with someone else… what she felt for Demi… it was one-of-a-kind.
Selena rested her head against the cool glass of the window, her sobs ending, but not the tears. She turned and wiped her eyes, picking up her keyboard and placing it on her bed. She grabbed her notebook and lay on her stomach, the words flowing onto the paper. Soon she had a rhythm and melody in her head, and she would turn to the keyboard to try it out.
Hours were spent in her room. Dinner was denied; she told Brian she’d already eaten. All night, Selena worked on her song.
And then she was done. Her mom and Brian had gone to bed a while before, so Selena didn’t play it for anyone else. She was very self-conscious with her music, so usually she would play it for her parents; go back and make changes, even if they’d completely loved it; then play it again for them; then play it for Taylor; then--based on what her friend said--make more changes; and then play it again for Taylor before declaring a song “completed”. Songs were never finished, she knew, but eventually you reached a point where you knew the song was where it was supposed to be.
But this time, she just knew that this song, whether others thought it was amazingly good or horribly bad, was right, the way it was already. It expressed her feelings from the day, that moment in the car… if she made any changes at all, then all that would be lost.
She was singing this song tomorrow. The producers or whoever could yell whatever they wanted at her for changing so last-minute, but Selena didn’t really give a damn.
She put everything away and got ready for sleep, but once she was in bed, she found she couldn’t sleep at all. The song she’d just written was playing in her mind loudly, on repeat, and images of Demi were flashing along with the beat.
Selena briefly wondered what Demi’s reaction was going to be, and then she shoved the thought from her head. No. It didn’t matter what Demi thought of the song, because Selena was going to get over Demi.
Even if Demi wanted her back…
She swore to herself right then that if Demi came to try to sweep Selena off her feet, Selena would win. She always won. Selena would not fall over herself for this girl, only to get her heart broken once more. She refused to. Selena was not somebody’s plaything they could play games with.
So that was that.
Selena woke up to an empty house and a note left on the kitchen counter. Her parents had left for their “vacation”. Their flight had been pushed up for some reason, and they had to leave right away. They’d miss her performance, and they were both terribly sorry, blah, blah, blah, Selena couldn’t have cared less at the moment. They weren’t going to be there, fine. She still had Taylor.
The honk of a car horn from outside reminded her of this fact, and so Selena grabbed a granola bar and the sheet music to her song before running out the door, jumping into the passenger side seat of Taylor’s car. When Selena saw the look on her best friend’s face, she couldn’t help but grin as well. “So?” she asked as Taylor pulled out the drive.
Taylor’s smile only got wider as she said, “So what?”
Selena lightly smacked her on the arm before saying, “You know damn well ‘what’, so spill, girlie. How’d it go with Miley?”
Taylor sighed, leaning back in her seat. “It was… perfect, Sel, it really was. She’s amazing.”
Selena relaxed, glad her friend was happy. “How so?”
Taylor shook her head. “I’ll give you the deets later. How’d it go with Miss Lovato?”
Selena shook her head and looked out the window.
“Oh, come on,” Taylor said, her shoulders dropping. “What happened this time?”
Taylor stayed quiet while Selena explained to her everything that head happened after she’d left with Miley. What Taylor did say, once she was finished, wasn’t exactly what Selena wanted to hear.
“You shouldn’t have left.”
Selena turned to Taylor with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, did you ever think Demi was just scared? And couldn’t get the words out? You know that’s happened to you before.” Selena turned back around, her gaze slowly dropping to her fidgeting hands. “And then you go and blow up at her--God, Sel, you probably scared the poor girl half to death.”
“How do you know she wasn’t just playing some… some game with me, huh?”
Taylor sighed as they parked outside the building. She took off her seatbelt and turned to Selena. “You’re the first girl she’s even had a crush on, Sel. Miley told me. She’s still trying to figure things out; more than likely, she just got scared. Reality’s harsh sometimes.”
Oh. Selena hadn’t thought of that.
Well, that sure changed things…
Taylor sighed once more as Selena didn’t say anything. “Just promise me you’ll talk to her? Let her find her words this time, explain why she turned away. Okay?”
Selena closed her eyes and took a deep breath before murmuring, “Okay.” She looked up at Taylor’s smiling eyes. “But I’m not getting my hopes up.”
Taylor nodded. “Deal.”
Taylor left her in the audience with a kiss on the cheek and a “good luck”. She walked backstage, wringing her hands nervously, and looked at all the crew running around. She turned to her left and saw the stage, hidden from view of the audience. She slowly walked over to the mic stand already set up. The band’s instruments were set behind her, but none of the musicians were there at the moment.
She looked in front of her at the curtain and brought her hand up to the mic. It wasn’t on, so she didn’t worry about making noise. She swept her eyes over the curtain, imagining the audience by the growing noise coming from behind it. She was about to bare her soul to over a hundred people.
Her eyes started stinging as doubt hit her, causing her throat to close and breathing to become harder. She turned and ran to the backstage exit, running into the open just as the first tear fell.
She leant against the wall and put a hand to her chest. Her heart was beating way too fast. She tried to slow her breathing, which took a few minutes, but her heart never slowed; it’d always been a side-effect of Selena’s nervousness.
Then she heard the host’s voice from inside, announcing that there’d been a change in the program and Demi would be performing first. Selena took another deep breath before walking back inside.
