Is authorship like mothership, or rather authorhood like motherhood? In both examples, a woman gives birth. Before one can become an author or a mother, one must consider many possible plights. Setting aside money for the expenses that come with a child--diapers, doctors visits, the child's education--is no different than amassing great wealth (so as to avoid destituteness) while creating a New York Times bestseller.
