She was his perfect match. That was what his grandfather had said, when she was young and naïve at sixteen. She often wonders now if it had come down to this, if he had seen Nate-Nathanial here, standing by the telephones, a cigar in his mouth waiting for the word.
She watches him now, her eyes following his pacing steps along the parlor hall. She stands up and approaches him, resting her hand on his shoulder. “Nate.” She whispers gently. “You know no matter what, I’d love you anyway.”
He nods, removing the cigar from his lips and blowing the smoke out away from her. “I know, Blair. I know.” He looks back at her and touches the ends of her hair.
These are the moments when she feels young again. When he’s her Nate, not Nathanial she has to share with everyone. She hates it when he’s gone for days; but when he looks at her - really looks at her, she feels like it’s all worth it.
“Nate! Nate! It’s over. You won.”
He snaps his head to the voice behind him and moves away from his wife to go into the room next door. She hears the excited bellows and the cracking open of champagne bottles. She sighs, moving back towards the chair she was sitting in.
This was it. Nate Archibald was president of the United States.
…
Later that night, he takes her for a walk in her favorite park. The snow is already falling; a little earlier than usual. She puts one of her hands in the pocket of his long over coat and leans into him some.
“Blair, I know I haven’t been fair to you lately,” he begins as he continues to look forward. “I promise things will be better now.”
“Now that you’re president?” she teases. “Look I know the next…eight years will be tough, but we’re not that old yet.”
He laughs some and places his hand along her lower back. “Let’s just focus on the first four right now.”
She bumps her hip into his. “Are you kidding me? We all know your award winning smile will win you another election.”
He walks close to her the rest of the night in silence.
For the first time, she can’t quite read him.
…
For the first time in years, he asks her to fix his tie. She smiles when her rounded stomach bumps into his while she does.
“You’re usually so good at this.” He teases.
She smiles looking up at him. “I can’t help but feel like there’s something in the way.”
He places his hands on her swelled stomach and rubs his hand along it slowly. “You know this is … it. I can’t really back out.”
She smiles, nodding slowly. “I know, Nate. I’m proud of you.”
He nodded some and tightened his tie. “How do I look?”
“Like a politician.”
He grins and touches the ends of her hair again. “You ready to do this?”
She quirks her brow, “Are you?”
He shrugs. “I think so. I have to be.”
She nods and pushes her fingers in between his and wraps them slowly around his fingers. “You are.”
…
“This is John Williams with CNN news; we’re with president-elect Nate Archibald and President Robert Hughes, waiting for the swearing in.”
“Mrs. Archibald? When is the baby due?”
“Nate! Nate! How do you feel?”
“How does it feel to be the youngest president, ever? Are you sure you’re ready?”
To each questions, Blair saw Nate smile his smile and move forward. She feels a wave of nervousness hit her when they began to question her. What did she expect really? To be the mute wife no one ever really wrote stories about?
“Three months.” She mutters nervously, keeping her hand tightly in Nate’s as they walked to the platform, finally.
It wasn’t that she had never talked to a reporter before, it was the fact that she didn’t want to say the wrong thing (she was an expert at that).
She sits down behind the podium and watches for Nate to begin the speech she had heard him say nine hundred times at least. She knew he was ready to face whatever came in obstacle, and she was ready to smile, just like she practiced.
Of course it went off without a hitch.
…
“I can’t believe you’ve never visited the White House, Blair.” Nate laughs on the late night limo ride over. “I mean…it’s the White House.”
She rolls her eyes, “It’s a big white house, not that big of a deal.”
He laughs, again, hardly believing what she’s saying. “Okay, Blair.”
“I’m serious!” she protests laughing. “I’m not the kind of girl who visits stuff like that, you know that.”
He slips his hand into hers and kisses her hand, gently. “We’ll do all this together.” He moves his hand down to her swelled stomach, and keeps it there.
“Thanks, Nate. But I already knew that.” She smiles placing her hand on top of his.
“So I got you something.” He smiles watching her expression. “I know this isn’t an anniversary or anything, but I wanted to.”
She smiles, again holding out her hand. “Gimme.”
He laughs, handing her the box. He watches as her eyes light up when she sees the necklace inside. “You like it?” he asks.
“Like it? I love it, Nate, thank you.” She mutters putting her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. “What’s this for?”
“The beginning of something new,” he smiles placing his hand on her leg.
And for the first time since he was elected, she’s scared, scared for his life and the stability of their marriage.
