Life Sentence

You'd think he'd be used to it by now. It's not like this is the first prison he's ever worked in. At this point in his life, Joe figures he's probably spent as much time in prison as he has out. He shakes his head as he stretches, staring down into Em City's empty quad, the prickle on the back of his neck an uneasy reminder of all the eyes watching him as he climbs the stairs to start his rounds. An hour into lockdown, and already the natives are restless; pacing back and forth like caged animals in a zoo. They may look harmless behind the glass, but they're deadly all the same.

He breathes out a heavy sigh. Joe doesn't fool himself; he knows he'll likely spend the rest of his years here, until he retires to spend all his time staring at the tv screen, in a
prison of his own making. Unless some angry buzzard takes him out early, that is. He frowns. It doesn't seem right, somehow. His bad reputation as a lead-foot may have earned him more than one speeding ticket over the years, but he's never done anything to deserve this life sentence.
