Aug 01, 2010 11:25

Title: Someone Like You
Pairing: T.K/Kari, Ken/Yolei
Friendship: Kari & Gatomon
Summary: Kari collects pain in the same way other people collect cards or postage stamps.
Disclaimer: I don't own Digimon.
Notes: I actually wrote this right after I wrote Truth. At the time, I thought it was complete crap. Yesterday, though, I finally filled up the notebook it was in, and went through it to decide what I should type up from the ones I haven't yet, which is when I decided this one had some potential. Ironically enough, I like Ken/Kari and dislike Ken/Yolei, but whatever.

Someone Like You

One day, Yolei asks her, all worry and concern, if she likes Ken, and she has to smile before she tells her no.

She and Ken, she knows, will never work even if she did like him. They're too similar- they both keep too much inside. They slowly accumulate the pain, letting it build up until they want to scream but will only bite their tongues and smile. It will be destructive; they will fall to pieces right before each other's eyes in a way few people could understand.

Kari collects pain, in the same way other people collect cards or postage stamps. She opens herself up to other people's heartache, listens to their problems with such a sweet, supportive smile that they can't help but tell her all. And so she packs their pain away in her chest, pitying and yearning to be able to do more. And Ken- she'll eat his pain up, his self-loathing and guilt, and no matter how hard she will try to save him, she will only doom him more.

People like them, they need someone louder, more confident. Angrier, even. Like T.K, with his hatred of the darkness. He won't lock it away, he'll fight it until it's gone and he'll make sure she can fight it too. Or Yolei, with her loud voice and way of saying anything that pops into her head. She'll fight the darkness another way, with her confidence and insecurity, with fumbles and embarrassment, although she can be angry too, something Kari still feels on her cheek.

Gatomon never speaks of her time with Myotismon. She knows that Kari knows that it still haunts her, sometimes. More then once she's been caught staring at a computer with a haunted look, or seen flinching when a horse movie pops up on the television and the rider touches a whip to the horse's flank. She doesn't like vampire movies either, but when Kari presses her to talk about it, to tell her what happened all those years ago, all she will say is that it was a long time ago and she is with Kari now.

She doesn't do it because she's like Kari, because she likes to keep everything bottled up inside- no, she does it because she knows Kari better then even T.K or Tai do. Gatomon knows that she'll just wrap her pain up tight, and put it close to her heart, where she can keep it close, and that she carries enough pain with her as it is. She doesn't need Gatomon's tragedy too.

Yes, Gatomon thinks, Kari and Ken are far too similar, and so are she and Wormmon. The only difference between them is that Gatomon can protect her partner from her past, and he cannot. Gatomon can hide her tragedy, while his and Ken's are entwined.

Then they snuggle up together, and watch as a blushing Yolei stumbles over the words she's saying to Ken, soft smiles on their faces.
