With Clint Eastwood, it's either a hit or miss, and it's been misses for a long while now. But I feel that even if J. Edgar won't be received well, I think Leo will still get the nomination and possibly even Armie Hammer for supporting. I agree that he was the best part about the trailer. Maybe also Judi Dench for supporting actress.

George Clooney is the front runner with The Descendants for best actor. People love the movie and him in it, unless Leo gives the most amazing performance in J. Edgar, I think George will win Oscar number two. Shame is too graphic for the older members of the Academy to vote for Fassbender. Without a doubt it will get an NC-17 rating. Fox Searchlight promised they won't have the movie edited, though they will campaign for Fassbender and I hope he gets at least a nod. Carey Mulligan has also been getting praise for Shame, but I think all the focus and campaigning will be for Michael.

I don't think Brad Pitt is in just yet. And I think Gary Oldman will get it, if for nothing else, because he's never been nominated before and he's seriously overdue.

I agree that Jean Dujardin for the Artist is looking like will happen and Michael Shannon for Take Shelter could end up as a surprise nomination.

Ugh I honestly thought Ryan Gosling he was going to get a nomination with the year he's had. The versatility he's shown in his acting and because he was robbed a nomination for Blue Valentine. His only real chance is for The Ides of March and, just like with your review, he's been getting good notice, but there's nothing too special about his performance. He's not out just yet, though it's looking more and more less likely it will happen:(

Even Eastwood's "misses" tend to get some love, as long as the subject matter is in Academy territory. Other than Gran Torino, he's pretty much been showered with nominations. Changeling and Invictus both had mixed reviews and still ended up getting significant acting nominations. And yeah, I feel like Judi Dench will get nominated for something this year. I'm just not sure what.

Ugh, I am so sick of George at this point. I'm sure he's great in The Descendants and yes that movie is getting crazy raves but I just do not see anything special in what he does. But I'm still hopeful because George was considered the early favorite both in 2007 and 2009, but ended up as the bridesmaid in the end when DDL and Jeff Bridges broke into the race later in the season. I agree about Shame - it's no doubt getting the NC-17 and I just can't see the Academy going for it no matter how much critics love or how much they campaign.

Michael Shannon seems like a critical favorite so if he gets enough support from them, he could potentially make it. And he did manage a somewhat surprising nomination for RR in 2008 so they clearly like him already.

Sucks about Ryan but I don't think any of his films will be strong enough to give him a nomination. I don't even think he'll come as close as Blue Valentine last year. but it's ok, the guy's career is going through the roof right now.
