Agree with most of what you said. I loved the movie, but I've only seen it once. I need to see it again... and again. And I agree with you on the cast really being an ensemble and no one really carrying the film. I personally think that the narrative carried it and the interesting plot. I loved all of them. I also found it interesting that Leo's character in this was somewhat similar to the one he played in Shutter Island, including the crazy wife and all. :/ Maybe it was just a coincidence. Best score ever too. Hans Zimmer is a genius, but I think we all know that.
And about the ending: I loved that it was open for interpretation. I don't understand why everyone is whining about it. Maybe they wanted it to be darker... who knows. I thought it was perfect.
One more funny thing that happened when I was in the theatre. I was sitting next to these group of guys who were with one girl - I think she was the girlfriend of one of them - and she kept sighing when Marion's character kept showing up and ruining everything. And finally in the scene where she shows up in the snow scene she said out loud "I would seriously join the NRA for this bitch. Someone please put her down. Take the gun and shoot her in the FUCKING face." And then when Leo shot her she said, "Thank you so much. Dumb bastard." :D I was laughing so hard.
Haha, I know right? I had a feeling once they revealed the whole 'his wife is dead' thing that this could be similar to Shutter Island. And then low and behold, the "twist" at the end just sealed the deal.
I think the ending could've been bad if they tried to make it too obvious but it was just enough of a tease so the audience feels uneasy but not so much that you know it was a contrived twist.
LOL, people I saw it with got fed with Mal and the kids too whenever they appeared. They were like "LEO GET OVER IT".
I did like how dark Nolan went with Mal's character though. I was thinking about it, and other than Carrie Anne Moss' character in Memento, that's the darkest he's ever gone with a female character.
IMO, this is probably his best movie for female characters. While I love what he did for the Batman franchise, I don't think he put much effort into the female character(s) there.
See, I agree with you 100% on that. I love Nolan. He's the best director working right now in this genre and is one hell of an inventive writer, but his females need work. I thought Rachel was much more developed in TDK, but I think that had a lot to do with what Maggie brought to the role because she's such a strong actress. But I even saw her struggling to get a strong hold on Rachel because she was underwritten. So, yeah, Mal and even Ariadne were really interesting characters and had a lot more depth than most of his females have had.
I still say that Carrie Anne Moss' character in Memento is his best one yet though. That performance is also really underrated. I'm hoping that he creates a well-developed female for Batman 3 and I'm hoping that he'll finally cast Rachel McAdams, seeing as though he's been trying to do it since TDK. -fingers crossed- She'd be perfect as a love interest or a villain or something. I can see her fitting in to one of his films perfectly.
I agree, Carrie Anne Moss was great in Memento. I think it's nice that he finally had two interesting female characters in a movie (I guess The Prestige had two girls but neither were really exceptional characters). I'm kind of sick of those movies where they'll have like 10 guys and throw in a girl just for PC reasons.
Rachel was much better in TDK but even then, it still felt like he threw in this girl because it's a superhero movie and you can't have a superhero movie without a love interest. But at least she served some purpose in TDK. In Batman Begins, I really didn't understand why she was there. Not to mention, Katie Holmes was so miscast and had zero chemistry with Christian Bale. I guess also it's that the character doesn't have the mythology of the rest of the characters and people just didn't care much.
Rebecca Hall's performance was amazing in The Prestige, but yeah, her character and the others were really underdeveloped and didn't have much of a purpose. But that's still my favorite movie of Nolan's and most likely always will be. I still don't know how it was shut out of the Oscars the year after it came out.
OMFG. I KNOW! I liked the idea of Rachel more than the actual character or the performance in general in Begins. Katie's a terrible actress. Or at least I think she is. I had to endure 6 years of her bad acting on Dawson's Creek, lol. Torturous. I don't know how she's still working. But yeah, she was upstaged by pretty much everyone in Begins, especially Cillian Murphy, who is brilliant in everything he is in, no matter how small the role. I kept thinking "what in the hell is he doing even talking to her?" :/
I love Rebecca Hall and I think she gave a great performance but I think we could've used more insight into that character and what she had to struggle with cause that woudl've been really interesting (having to live with the Christian Bale character like that).
Same, I actually like the whole childhood friend thing but somehow, it just didn't work. Definitely didn't help that Katie Holmes was playing the part, surrounded by like super amazing actors.
Agreed. I wanted more of her character because she was really interesting and it was the first time I had seen Rebecca in anything and I've been a fan ever since. She's one of my favorites now. I really wish she'd work with Christian again. They had great chemistry.
They did have great chemistry! And Bale is not really known for having amazing chemistry with his on-screen love interests, imo. It was probably his best pairing Little Women with Winona Ryder.
God, do I agree with that. He was great with Winona, Rebecca, and I thought he looked great with Penelope Cruz in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, as sucky as that movie was as a whole.
Hell to the no. I would have followed him to the fucking war and waited there on the front lines for his ass. LOL. Did you SEE him in that movie? That was before he ruined his body for The Machinist. - sigh - I would have kicked Cage to the curb so fast...
And about the ending: I loved that it was open for interpretation. I don't understand why everyone is whining about it. Maybe they wanted it to be darker... who knows. I thought it was perfect.
