Ah, Casablanca! I haven't watched that in ages! Well this is a very interesting picspam indeed. I didn't know about how the ending had to be that way to uphold the code! But I did like that it ended that way.

The Notorious kiss was very cleverly arranged indeed! I loved that scene.

It probably would've ended that way anyways, but knowing they had to follow the code forced them to HAVE to end that way. Crazy to think what might've happened if there was no code though.

Hitchcock was always really clever about the Code. A lot of his films tried to push the envelope with sexual symbolism. And I think they had to change Rebecca to fit the code (cause you weren't allowed to show someone getting away with murder or something).

Incidentally, I love all of these films except From Here to Eternity... because I haven't seen it :))

I'd definitely recommend seeing it if only for the famous beach scene!

Like it, but if these films "pushed" the Hays Code, then films by Otto Preminger punched it in the gut! I'd recommend watching both ANATOMY OF A MURDER (with the use of words like "panties" and a frank dissection of rape) and THE MOON IS BLUE (if you think Holly Golightly was best at being flirtatiously sexy, then you haven't seen Maggie McNamara talk about "virgins" and "seduction". I believe this film had more to do with the collapse of the Hays Code than SOME LIKE IT HOT.)

Anatomy of a Murder is *fantastic*! I watch it almost every time it comes on TV! I adore Jimmy Stewart and you are right about it punching the code in the gut. I was surprised how frank it was when compared to other movies in that time period.

I love Anatomy of a Murder. I think it was the combination of that, Psycho and Some Like it Hot that killed the code. Some Like it Hot being a big financial hit without a seal of approval was more of an impact than its actual content.

Thanks! Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is probably the most obvious one that would run into trouble cause of its subject matter.
