first day with the doggy dogg - play by play!

So yesterday we picked up a puppy! His name's Berkeley, he's a 5-week old beagle.

He immediately warmed up to us first when we met him and his bros and sis at the farm, so we kids all decided we wanted him and not one of the others. My mom wanted this spotty one because he looked different, but we weren't having it. LOL

When we got home we put him in a baby tub, but he whimpered and tried to get out. We took him out of the tub to walk around, I think he realized we were getting our dinner prepared because he wandered around and whimpered even more. Actually I think that might be the only sound he can make. We all felt terrible because we thought he was hungry but my oldest bro was out at walmart getting his proper food.

When the food arrived he wasn't interested, he drank a little water though. After we humans had finished our meal, my mom gave him a bath because he was all muddy from the farm. He conked out in my oldest bro's arms soon afterwards. Bro brought Berkeley up to my parent's room to stay with them, wrapped him up in a towel, put him on top of a blanket in the doggy bed we bought for him (which he's apparently not supposed to use yet). It was quite a sight. I swear if I had my own camera I'd be all over him with the photos.

He woke up around 8:30 while my mom was on the phone with my nana. I overheard mom talking and saying ooh he's nipping at my feet. He seems to have something for feet, especially hers, so I guess she didn't think anything of it. But I was overhearing and I got the feeling he needed to pee. We rushed him downstairs and I quickly threw a piece of cardboard on the ground as his peeing spot. We put him in the box and he climbed out, walked about 2 feet over from the box, and peed there on the floor. LMAO! So he met the neighborhood kids, and we kicked them out a bit later. Then he played with us a bit. My dad came in from the backyard and Berkeley instantly froze and ran away. dad was avoiding the pup because he disagreed with the whole dog thing, so I guess Berkeley was scared and didn't know who he was. Anyway we all watched him wander and play for a while, then he went over to the front of the house where we've got our shoes. He played in the shoes, or that's what we thought he was doing. He's so tiny that he was falling into them. He eventually stopped and pooped intentionally on my dad's shoe because the smell was unfamiliar (we presume). I'm sorry but we were all lol'ing. Except dad.

So last night was interesting. Think of a human baby...what does it do at night? Sleep maybe, a bit, but also spends a lot of time crying until mommy comes and consoles it, then falls asleep. Lather rinse repeat. Well apparently doggy babies are the same. I woke up around 1am to Berkeley's whimpering. I ignored it at first, but it became more persistent and sad like he needed attention. I went to his cage and he was biting and squishing his face through, he doesn't like it in there at all. I tried to pet him but he probably couldn't see me, well he doesn't really seem to be interested in me so that could be it too, but it was totally dark and i couldn't find a battery operated light or anything to hold near. He was still distressed even though I was petting him. My mom came out after the whimpering went on and on, poor mom, it seems you have a fifth baby...she picked him up and cradled him and cooed at him, and he finally stopped crying. Oh my goodness lmao. He slept for a short while then started up again, and my mom had to come back to the cage again, haha. Needless to say I'm exhausted, I haven't talked to her yet today but I'm sure she is too.

Sooo, that was day one. First impressions...yeah having a dog is pretty cool, he immediately felt like one of the family. He doesn't seem to be interested in me as much as anyone else though (not including dad, lol)...and also the kids bombard him so much that I can't just sit there and pet him and let him get to know me. Anyway. Right now the little guy's chilling and rightfully so, he's been harassed by the boys all day. Hopefully for everyone's sake he gets a little more sleep tonight :)
