AU Background: Soul's universe branches off from the original series during the second fight with Crona in the rise of the Kishin Asura. When Maka decides to plunge into the madness drawn on by black blood to aid their fight, it goes very, very wrong. Soul is unable to pull her back out, and so in a last ditch effort on Maka's part she shoves him out of it before he can get swallowed up by the insanity as well. Instead of befriending Crona like they do in the original timeline, they instead defeat him/her and go onward to destroy the black blood and defeating Medusa. Afterwards, Professor Stein examines her and says she'll likely be like this forever.
Months passed, and Maka started having violent moodswings, during which Soul would lock himself up in his bedroom to avoid either getting hurt or accidentally injuring her in her tantrums. Blair was given to Kid for her own protection, and Soul slowly began barring their friends and her father from visiting. He began to hide the sharp things from her, like the meat knives, before he bought blunter versions, and locking up the house when he leaves for his job. They've been taken off the active Meister/Weapon directory, living with Shibusen's support while Stein works for a cure.
Soul developed a severe anxiety disorder due to constantly having to hide from Maka. The medication Stein gave him only helps so much and it evolved into a need to make sure everything around her is safe when she has a violent episode, quite similar to Kid's OCD fits when he realizes something isn't safe and near his Meister. He takes care of Maka mostly out of the heavy guilt he feels, and mostly through knowing nobody else would be able to. He's the only one who can predict her moodswings, or knows when something displeases her.
Personality:
On a first meeting, Soul seems laid back, almost apathetic and aloof. He's constantly in a slouch with a drooping look on his face, hands in his pockets. This is his definition of the 'cool guy' he's trying to be. In many ways, he's the complete opposite of Maka; a total slacker when it comes to schoolwork but more than eager to get into a fight with someone who's been devouring souls for their own greed, especially if it means a soul for himself. Yum. This separates him from other Weapons - most Weapons don't like the taste of souls, yet Soul drools over the idea of chowing down on one.
Immature, headstrong and stubborn seem to be the right words to describe Soul, however one of the things he's gained from years of trying to be 'cool' is that he's positively the most loyal person you could ever meet. He considers breaking promises uncool, and would do anything to protect his friends and Meister. Despite appearing to be apathetic, Soul is capable of being determined and gets people back on their feet in desperate times with the right words.
After Maka is drawn into black blooded insanity, his personality doesn't really change much from the original Soul. Probably the most drastic part is his anxiety, which is drawn on by a constant fear of Maka hurting herself and being hurt by her during her bipolar episodes and hiding in his room waiting for it to be over. Since it's been a couple of years since he started taking care of her, his anxiety has lowered somewhat, but he still needs to regularly take the medication Professor Stein prescribed him. He has violent shaking fits every now and then if he doesn't. He's more mature than he used to be, having pretty much become Maka's nurse overnight and been forced to grow up. He still retains the name 'Eater', mostly out of fear of his family having another failure to attach to his name if they learned what happened.
One of the things he keeps to himself is that he's quite vulnerable to low self esteem, first with his brother Wes and then with other Weapons like Justin. He's reluctant to share these problems with others, coming off as cold when inquired about it, and shares Crona's fear of bonding with people.
Despite being a Weapon, he's also human. He has an appreciation for jazz music and Gothic architecture, plays basketball during wind-down times and sometimes has a dark and sarcastic sense of humor.
Abilities:
As a Weapon, Soul has the ability to transform into a human-sized scythe, and even partially transform his arm from the shoulder down into a blade. Despite the ability to transform into a scythe on his own and perform partial transformation, Soul is greatly hindered by the absence of his Meister Maka Albarn. Soul can also take advantage of Maka's Soul Perception through their Resonance, able to sense other people's Souls as well as she can, as well as her Anti-Demon Wavelength. Like all Weapons, though he's usually seen in the form of a scythe he has the ability to change his shape - called Form Manipulation - but the extent of this change has not been shown yet apart from manipulating the length of his blade.
Black Blood, however, is an ability that he gained after being infected by Crona. Black Blood allows him - through a room in his mind inhabited by a little demon the Black Blood implanted - to invade the blood stream of those he performs Soul Resonance with. Black Blood usually comes with an intense insanity, but Soul is able to overcome that insanity and drive the madness away. With this, Soul also has the ability to create Resonance links with anyone despite the difference in their wavelengths.
