OOC Heacanon Post
In my 100% fabricated version of events, Matthew was born as the son of indentured servants in Laus. As a poor servant child he turned to thievery to help support himself/his family. He had a knack for it, and was picked up by a peasant's revolt movement against the Marquess of Laus. The organization was mostly corrupt, and was more of an attempted power grab than a real revolution. This is where he first began to work as a spy, all though he was at this point young and inexperienced, (12). The revolt was put down brutally with the help of Ostian forces, but immediately before hand an Ostian spy was sent to dig up their headquarters.
This is where Leila and Matthew first meet, he tries to intercept her, she breaks his arm, but he agrees to sell out the "revolutionaries" in return for a job working for Ostia. She agrees and Matthew along with his parents move to Ostia, now living in considerably better conditions than they had been in Laus, although they are by no means rich.
In Ostia Matthew is trained more formally as a spy, and rises in the ranks, a constant UST laden rivalry with Leila going on behind the scenes. It culminates with their relationship. They do love each other, although in an affectionate snarky kind of way. Their relationship is not without its problems, but it's not an OH TEH DRAMAZ relationship either.
Cue the games.
Again, this is all completely made up and I am willing to change just about any part of it, or completely scrap it, if it doesn't click with other castmates.
ETA: There is some headcanon that would castmates other than Leila. Namely, it would affect Sain or Wil. In my version of events the three of them became fast friends over the course of the game, and got up to various mischief, but again, it's all up for discussion.
