So, guess who I talked to today? Adrienne Bousain -
Senator Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) Deputy State Director! I feel so important.
Why did Senator Boxer's Deputy State Director call little ole me, you ask? Well, I'll tell you.
Back in December I attended, with Alex, a book reading/signing for Sen. Boxer's book, A Time to Run (really good, by the way). While she was talking about the book, she mentioned that the protagonist is a champion of children. My immediate thought was, "Damn, wish I had some
Samantha Foundation brochures!" Well, I met her, got her book, and had it signed. I don't remember if I mentioned anything to her about the Foundation or not, but whatever.
So the next day at work I mentioned to my boss, Judy - a California resident, that I attended the event and that the book's main character champions children's causes and that I wished I had brochures. Judy immediately says, "Why don't you send her letter with the brochure?" Brillian Scribe Vanessa wrote a letter and I signed it. Sixty cents later it arrives in California.
I essentially forgot about the letter and Barbara Boxer until today. Around 4:30 I'm sitting in my office explaining something to my intern when Vanessa walks into my office looking like she saw a ghost.
Vanessa (in her excited/confused/spastic voice): Adrienne Brody or something from Senator Boxer's office on line 10?!!!
Me: BUH?! Ok..... (picks up phone) Good afternoon, this is Jessica.
Ms. Bousain introduces herself and says that she received my letter and meant to call and suddenly it's February (I kinda missed a couple of details as I was trying to shoo Vanessa out of my office so I could focus) and that she had been meaning to call me. My thought: Holy crap! She's been meaning to call me?!?!
Here's an approximate transcript of the conversation:
AB: So, you met Senator Boxer at a signing?
Me: Yes, I did! I just finished her book a couple weeks ago (thank God!) and I absolutely loved!
AB: Oh good! It's fun isn't it?
Me: Yes it is! I really enjoyed it and it was really exciting to meet her - it makes me wish she were my senator.
AB: Well, she can be everyone's senator in spirit. (This must have been when I was all "teeheehee" according to Vanessa.)
AB: Well, as senate we don't have a budget to donate......I see you guys are about to have your golf tournament...Are you guys national?
Me: That's what we're aspiring to, this is our first major fundraiser, we are having an even in April, blah, blah, blah...mentioned a bunch of stuff we're hoping to do...
AB: Well, we don't normally work with out of state organizations, but since you guys are doing such great work (SCORE!) we would like to send you a flag that was flown over the US Capitol that comes with a certificate saying that Senator Boxer flew the flag for you guys to auction off. (!!!!)
I went on to thank her profusely and even bring up donating the book as well. In retrospect, shouldn't have really asked for more, huh? Oh well.
Me: We just appreciate anything you can do for us and to have your support. I sent the letter thinking it was just a shot in the dark...
AB: Usually it is, but again because you guys are doing such great work (SCORE!) and it's a cause that Senator Boxer would support (SCORE!)....
And then she went on to say that if we ever do an event in CaliforniaHER DIRECT NUMBER!!!
I feel like superwoman. Yes, it's silly, but I do. I rock. And so does Senator Boxer and Adrienne Bousain. Go buy Senator Boxer's book. And vote for her. (If you're allowed to. She rocks!)
