So, this evening I had "training" for presidential debate volunteers. I'm prefacing this story by saying that part of the application process included an interview and submission of your resume.
None of us knew how we would be split up and what types of opportunities were available to volunteers. So, when it finally got around to splitting into groups (that we were already assigned to), I tried to guess which group I was in. Group 1 is debate hall (so people helping at the Convo Center). I thought I'd be put in there seeing as how I was an intern there and the volunteer coordinator for the group was another intern from there. Group 2 was media. Which would have also made sense because I'm a PR major and we work with media. Group 3 was special events (for all the events surrounding the debate), which also would have made sense for both having worked events at the Convo Center and being a PR major. But no, I was put into group 4 - Parking & Transportation/Security/Hospitality.
My initial reaction was "WTF?? Well, let me see what the deal is with this group." That group was further subdivided into groups. I'm in the Airport group. Which means we meet media at the airport and tell them how to get to campus ("Out the door and grab a cab.").
...
I'm thinking, what the fuck was the interview for and how the hell did you people assign volunteers to teams?? I signed up for 1 shift as the times we'd be at the airport conflict with my schedule most of the time (unless I were to skip class and work, which I'm not about to do for this b.s. job). But I think I'm going to withdraw from volunteering. Which really fucking sucks because I was really looking forward to working the debate. I basically have to decide by tomorrow because I still need to sign a sheet in order to be able to get Secret Service credentials (how cool would that be?). Ugh. This bites.
