Poetry Advice

I was recently (slightly) scolded by a well respected poet.

We did a show together. We were both selling books and I had no change. The poet waved me over and asked me what I needed as they busted out a roll of 1's 5's and 10's. After the poet change my 20 they looked at me and said, "Come on. You need to have change. This is your job."

Although poetry is not my main job, I do rely on it for a decent chunk of my overall income.

I've probably left a bunch of money on the table due to my lack of professionalism. This was a nice reminder that even hobbies should be taken more seriously.

So I was thinking, what's the best poetry/writing/artistic advice you've received?
