bitterbird First of all I want to apologize for the delay with this one. I promised to made it in August but suddenly life just happened:D
And actually I'm not sure if it's really tips and tricks or guide or kind of tutorial. That's just something about blue icons.
This icon was requested so let me start with it.
1) GRADIENT FILL + LAYER MASK and/or PAINTING. I tried to make icons this way when I was participating in the challenge for
theskilldrill where only color fills were allowed. Then I changed it a little and tried this way of coloring on some other icons. For example this Stiles' icon contain like 8 masked gradient fill or color fill layers:
Add some text and light textures and you done! And if you don't like layer masks you can just pick a brush and paint like crazy instead of using color fill layers.
Some other examples:
2) TEXTURES. As you know I'm laziest human alive so I usually don't use a lot of textures but sometimes I really do and then I open my blue textures folder and start randomly choosing textures for the icon. For example:
other examples:
3) FAKE BACKGROUND. What can I say about fake backgrounds except the fact that is like one of my favorite techniques? Maybe nothing but as for me I prefer еo use fake blue background and make some color accents on the 'subject' for example Lydia's and Allison's hair or Cas' trenchcoat (or even text on Jackson's icon).
4) SEE THE PREVIOUS TUTORIAL. ( as I promised:D) In
this simple tutorial I showed how to make icon with warm lighting. Using these steps but changing color fill and gradient fill to more bluish and maybe add some other layers you can get something like this:
5) THE PSD. This is like the easiest way ever: if I see that the screencap isn't dark and has beautiful cyan on it I took my psd from
this post and just use it :D
So,I think that was all my fav ways of making blue icons. I really hope it was interesting or useful (I know it wasn't but don't tell me the truth:D)
And I really don't know what to say about my text... I'm addicted to writing quotes from the shows on the icons. and sometimes song lyrics. Gosh that's the worst explanation ever. But I can't come up with something more useful right now.
