Fresh Pome: North Harlem Night

North Harlem Night

St. Nick’s Saturday night
For African Dance Party
Music moments you can’t
Believe unless you were there
Rolling in human wave flowing
From stage players’ hands and
Breath rhythms wash
Over us like God waves
I’m hugging big Harlem
Men new brothers the drummer
Gives me the nod from stage
Later hugs me long our
Heads together hands on sweaty necks
I danced on chair and
Watched the Christmas
Lights throw colour all
Over fellow travellers
Dance their asses off on
Stage on chairs on floor
Eyes closed hearts up
Everybody smiling soul
Wide open

After 4, when the musicians changed
And we lost the African
Heart and mother love
Balloons had carried us
Upward all night then switched
Gears down into slow
Dirty Latin grooves and
Cock men shuffled
Out from shadows
Looking for open ass to grind
I walked out into north Harlem night
Shared cab with new friend and
Quiet words about everything
Now I’m back to 119th and seven
Again in bed, alone.

Mother Africa, I’m ready
For love.
