All Giants

Feb 04, 2008 23:45

I sacrificed a personal day from work to watch the game and I found myself in a crowded Albany bar with some friends and fans cheering on the Giants. I could have been at work waiting for the results of the last play slowly-and-painfully refresh on a computer screen or listen to someone yell out the scores in some corner of the office off a cell phone. Nah. Fuck that. I had to watch it with my own two eyes. What a roller coaster ride of a game. It was a close one and it encompassed everything in football from interceptions, conversions, hail marys, fumbles, sacks, jukes, completions, recoveries, scrambles, blitzes, hard hits and extraordinary plays. So much damn drama. The place went bananas when the Giants had officially won and we were like kids again high five'n each other and jumping around like fools celebrating with strangers you didn't even know but it didn't matter because we all shared something in common. I eventually found myself outside trying to catch my breath with a big smile on my face. I love sports. I love competition. In American Football, anything can happen on any given Sunday.

Giants Defense: Relentless

First and foremost, the New York Giants defense was phenomenal against the offensive line of the New England Patriots as they held the leagues number one quarterback, Tom Brady [50 touchdowns for 4806 yards in 2007] to only 1 touchdown during the entire Super Bowl. While the Giants defense seemed demoniacally possessed, the Patriots offense seemed lost and unprepared for the incoming onslaught. The 'Big Blue' were all over Tom Brady like flies on shit, owned him like white on rice, rushed him like sperm on egg and hunted him like beasts on prey. Tom Brady was sacked 5 times for a total loss of 37 yards and was rushed at least 12 times [I believe it was the most pressure that a defense put on Brady all season].

K. Mitchell acquired 1 sack for a NE loss of 7 yards.
J. Tuck acquired 2 sacks for a total NE loss of 14 yards.
M. Strahan acquired 1 sacks for a total NE loss of 6 yards.
J. Alford acquired a monster sack in the last 4th quarter drive of NE for a NE loss of 10 yards.

The New York Giants defense [54 tackles, 19 assists, 5 sacks, 9 quarterback hits, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble and 4 pass interruptions] dismantled the New England Patriot offense which kept the NYG in the game and gave Eli Manning the opportunity to make some plays.

Giants Offense: Playmakers

The New York Giants offense was not perfect, but every weapon in their repertoire was utilized. Starters and substitutes all contributed. The Eli Manning pass to David Tyree in the fourth quarter with a minute to go on 3rd and 5 will probably go down in NFL Super Bowl history as the greatest play. Eli Manning somehow someway was able escape a sack from the hungry hands of the NE Patriots defense. There were at least 3 or 4 players on NE that hand their paws on the Giants quarterback, but Manning persevered, evaded, dropped back, located Tyree and launched the bomb that Tyree somehow someway caught the ball against his helmet with his left hand at the peak of his leap and secured the ball with his right hand as he fell back to earth. Un-fucking-believable!

Quarterback Eli Manning threw 34 times with 19 completions and 2 touchdowns.

Running Back Ahmad Bradshaw carried the ball 9 times for 45 yards.
Running Back Brandon Jacobs carried the ball 14 times for 42 yards.

Wide Receiver Amani Toomer accumulated 6 catches for 84 yards.
Wide Receiver Steve Smith accumulated 5 catches for 50 yards.
Wide Receiver David Tyree accumulated 3 catches for 43 yards with 1 touchdown and the impossible helmet catch.
Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress accumulated 2 catches for 27 yards and the game winning touchdown.

Tight End Kevin Boss caught 1 pass for 45 yards.
Kicker Lawrence Tynes scored the games 1st points with a field goal and 2 extra points in the second half.

It was a David versus Goliath story and the underdogs prevailed. Almost everyone was against the Giants. No one believed in them. But some of us knew that the Giants had a chance. The momentum was in their favor. They played strong against the Patriots in the regular season and almost beat them. Then they beat Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay in the playoffs only to meet New England again in the Super Bowl. It doesn't matter how many games you win in the regular season. It's about making it to the playoffs and bringing your A game. The Giants obviously brought their A game and they earned the right to become champions in the pages of NFL history.

P.S.
Sorry Tiki. You were wrong about your former quarterback. No ring for you. Bitch!
