If you've seen Apocalypto, then you will recall the powerful words of the old story teller:
"And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give."
The most intelligent species on this planet and we are slowly destroying it. We live and consume, reproduce and consume more. When there's nothing left to consume, we search elsewhere and take, and then wage wars to take more. Some say it's necessary in order to maintain our current state of living. To ensure that we remain a superpower in the world. But, damn, the price for our current state of living seems to leave a wake of negative repercussions. Repercussions to the earth: pollution to our natural elements, air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, the extinction of wildlife, the destruction of rain forests, the depletion of natural resources, global warming, melting of the polar ice caps, deterioration of snow in our highest mountains, fracturing ice shelves, rising water and ocean levels, rising temperatures, rise in frequency of natural disasters, et cetera. Repercussions of war: destruction, murder, death of innocent lives, creation of weapons of mass destruction, biological warfare, amputation, life altering experiences, negative change in character, post traumatic stress disorder, casualties, friendly fire, widows, children without fathers, children without mothers, lives changed forever, et cetera. It is what it is.
The earth is overrun by man. Overpopulation. We are a cancer to this planet trying to fill the void in ourselves. The bottomless pit in man. We create and destroy. We multiply and spread. We consume and devour. We overpower and overwhelm. We are a disease slowly eating away the earth’s insides until there is nothing left to consume. We are the nemesis to all forms of life on earth. We are enemies even to ourselves. I do not believe that the earth will die, or ‘be no more’, in the hands of man. But if we remain in our current path unchanged, if we do not divert ourselves towards a better direction, then I do believe that mankind will eventually destroy itself. Maybe not in our lifetime, but in the generations to come. We will make ourselves extinct and then eventually another species will become dominant and have their chance to experience life on planet earth. In a way, we are just temporary visitors for the time being. Sadly, from the look of things, it seems that we are headed towards self-destruction. I hope this will not be the case. Life on earth is a gift to us. There is still time to change. But for now... it is what it is.
