It was quiet, not in an uncomfortable way at all; in fact it was soothing. The sun wasn’t high, but traces of the golden light had managed to sneak into the room from the blinds - giving the room a very restful atmosphere. For a moment there, he wished the world would go still, the silence was more comfortable than anything else as for then, making him drifting away again while closing his eyes.
But a movement on the bed and the small sound it made were more than enough to make Yamada blink his eyes open one more time. It was warm as it was, under that thick duvet, but it felt a lot tenderer when his companion pressed his cheek against Yamada’s back, hugging him from behind.
He knew that Daiki was probably doing it unconsciously in his sleep, but that small thing that Daiki always did when he was asleep often made Yamada find himself smiling. If there were one thing that he had missed so much, he would instantly say the fact that he got to share the bed with Daiki. He knew that it didn’t happen all that often, he probably could count the number of times it happened with only one hand, but it was his favourite moment nonetheless.
Turning, he found Daiki blinking his eyes open, actually staring back at him much to his surprise. “Oh… I thought you were still asleep,” Yamada said apologetically.
“No… I was long awake actually. Did I wake you up?” Daiki asked.
Yamada shook his head, once again smiling; always liking it when Daiki was just the way he was, no styled hair or anything at all. Staring at the person before him, Yamada wondered how long this would last. Just small silences with no one else around them, or not that many words were said from either of them.
Crawling off from the bed, Yamada walked towards the door, leaving a confused Daiki on the bed.
“Where are you going?” Daiki frowned.
“Locking the door. Inoo-kun would usually wake you up at this time of the day,” he answered.
“…and you’re locking the door? Still?”
He nodded, literally locking the door before heading back to the bed. A big grin was wide on his face as he snuggled his way to Daiki. “Do not want any one to disturb just yet,” he mumbled, resting his head on Daiki’s arm voluntarily.
“… why not?”
Yamada looked up, breathing slowly on purpose because each time they were that close face to face, his heart always knew how to skip a beat. It felt a little bit like those moments where no other thing was relevant to him, and he had to stop himself from frantically blush.
Slowly Yamada shifted even closer, his hand blindly found a comfortable spot on Daiki’s waist, clutching his fingers on the older guy’s t-shirt while resting his head on the other’s shoulder. “How long will you let me stay?” Yamada asked instead, not answering Daiki’s question at all.
“Well… until your mum and you make up of course.”
“Can I just stay here from now on?” Yamada asked again, wishfully.
He felt Daiki shifting, somehow ended up finding himself underneath Daiki. Yamada could only take a deep breath as he watch the older guy settling himself on top of him, Daiki’s elbows were by on each side of Yamada’s head, the older boy staring down at him from where he was.
“That’s… a very hard question to answer,” Daiki answered. “Though it’d be nice to have you around like this again every once in a while.”
Smiling, Yamada didn’t say anything more when he felt Daiki’s lips against his own. They were soft, delicate, and there was no tiny bit of hesitation in them like how they felt the first time Daiki claimed Yamada’s lips. He remembered that day well. It was just the day after he got locked up for the very first time.
Nothing felt nicer than wrapping his fingers on Daiki’s neck, pulling him closer just feel how good it was to actually do things willingly. Memories of his first day in that mansion were flashing before his eyes, remembering how nerve breaking it was, but somewhat was glad that it all ended up this way. Back then, he was pretty sure that it was the end of his life, if he had to be honest.
“I think I like Daiki-san better,” Yamada mumbled in between their small kisses.
“…why?”
“Calling you Daiki makes me feel superior. And if I have to be honest, I like you to be the superior one. Not the other way round,” he answered honestly.
“People are fighting to be free and you actually want to be dominated? Did you knock your head or something?” Daiki frowned, crawling away from Yamada, settling himself back to the younger boy’s side.
Yamada turned, eyes staring at Daiki’s pair, only blinking when it was necessary. It might be stupid but he wanted to be depended on Daiki, to be told of what to do, or just to have small little goals of making his owner happy because the real world scared him. He wasn’t prepared for it. His socialising skill was bottom rock and he knew he wasn’t capable of making life choices. He didn’t even know fifth grade’s maths for heaven sake!
“…I’m scared. The real world is outside my comfort zone,” Yamada mumbled. “I liked my life here. Even when you locked me up in the barn because it was a time where I feel closer to you. Knowing your anger, discovering your soft side, and the list goes on.”
Daiki didn’t react right away, seemingly not expecting this to come from Yamada at all. Yamada wasn’t lying or trying to be such a romanticist. He liked the way they were before, even when they seemed to loosen up a lot more around each other now. It didn’t feel right because he felt that he couldn’t be the companion like the way he was back in the days. It also felt so unreal. The dates, the phone calls, or the texts. He didn’t even know what they were now. Friends? Boyfriends?
After a long minute of silence, Daiki finally smiled, his finger poking Yamada’s cheek playfully. “… then maybe I made a mistake, didn’t I?” said Daiki.
The older boy crawled off from the bed, throwing his wide smile to Yamada while walking to the bathroom. That smile. Yamada didn’t get to see it often, but since he left, it wasn’t that hard to see anymore. It felt almost like all those walls that Daiki built around him had finally gone.
He watched Daiki’s back leaving his vision, disappearing as the bathroom’s door being closed. As silence crawled back to the room, Yamada wondered if he should take a small tour. It had been awhile and it would be great to see everyone again. So he sat up, making his way to the door.
Everything looked exactly the same. The carpeted stairs before the grand entrance still felt so huge, making him feel slightly insignificant still. He was barefoot, walking from a big extravagant lobby with wooden floor to a smaller tiled hallway - the staff hallway to the kitchen. It was busy, just as busy as he remembered it to be. Everyone was doing everything they could to make sure that the Ariokas would have breakfast ready just in time.
But somehow it felt different now. People actually noticed his present; all heads were turned to him as he walked through the small pathway, making him feel slightly uncomfortable. When he reached the bathroom that he used to queue up for in the morning, he could only smile awkwardly. They actually bowed when they saw him and gestured their hands as a signal that he could use the bathroom first if he wanted to.
Had the staff gone mad?!
Yamada didn’t waste the opportunity though, rushing into the bathroom after he gave them the deepest bow he could do. Locking himself inside, Yamada started to panic. Something was totally wrong. What did Daiki tell them this time? Or what did Hikaru tell everyone else? Well, considering the fact that Hikaru was the driver, as for now, he was the only one that knew Yamada was there.
He looked around the familiar bathroom, searching through the drawers to find some extra toothbrush and toothpaste, remembering Keito told him that he always had extra in one of the drawers. Sorry, Keito. I’m borrowing without asking your permission first, Yamada stared at the toothbrush that he finally managed to find.
An awkward smile later (after he went out from the bathroom), Yamada had to quickly make his way somewhere, anywhere at all at this point. Maybe the barn where he could say hi to Yuto and had a normal conversation without anyone staring at him weirdly. Though… Yuto should be having breakfast at this hour, right? The staff kitchen. Yeah. There.
He was glad that he still remembered perfectly every turning and the layout of the staff area well. It still looked really westernised like the rest of the mansion. Everyone was in their respective uniforms, giving him a very uncomfortable stare as Yamada passed them by.
“Yamada!!!”
Finaly. A warming welcome, he thought.
As he finally entered the staff kitchen, a smile grew on his face. There, Yuto and Keito were sitting on the table, eating their breakfast. Yuto was the one that greeted him, with a big warm smile on his face, standing up right after to give him a little hug. The boy was in his casual clothes, almost like the one that he wore when he met Yamada at the fast food restaurant the other day.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
“I stayed over last night,” Yamada answered, walking towards where Keito sat and settling himself down next to the butler’s assistant.
“Hey, mate,” Keito smiled to him, his face was still half surprised.
The staff kitchen felt exactly the same. The butlers suddenly went in to prepare the food for their respective bosses, while the other staff tried to eat their breakfast as fast as possible because they didn’t want to be late to do their job.
It took the three butlers a while to realise that Yamada was in the room with them, but once they did, they quickly rushed over to the table, looking just as surprised as Yuto and Keito earlier on. They were asking him a lot of questions, and Yamada could only smile awkwardly. It got even noisier as Ryutaro rushed into the room, eyes widening up not believe what he was seeing as a shout of disbelief escaping from his lips.
Bottom line. It felt like home.
But the hectic-ness of that homely kitchen stopped right away the moment someone opened the entrance door. Silence crept to the air as everyone quickly went back to what they previously did before they realised that Yamada was there. By the doorframe, Daiki stood, eyes weren’t looking entirely that happy, sending thorny atmosphere to everyone else in the kitchen.
“I thought you left,” Daiki spoke up, stepping to where Yamada sat.
“I was just saying hi to them,” Yamada replied.
“You could have told me…”
“But usually it takes you ages to shower anyway right? I thought I should be back by the time you were done,” Yamada defended himself.
“Still!” the older boy frowned unamusedly.
“Oh come on~,” Yamada stood up. “There’s no way I would be able to leave. Not without Hikaru-kun driving me back to my house.”
For some reason, Daiki turned his head to Hikaru, who quickly looked away as he sipped his coffee, seemingly not wanting to be Daiki’s rage target.
“Don’t you dare…” Daiki started.
“Don’t worry! I won’t!” exclaimed Hikaru before Daiki said more. “We’ll make sure that he will only leave when you said so!”
Yamada laughed, not knowing before that he would be able to witness such scene. Shaking his head amused-ly, he slid his hand to Daiki’s arm, pulling the other away from the kitchen. He really didn’t want to have any more unnecessary conversation in the staff kitchen. The very last thing he wanted was to look like a problem.
People stared even more now that Daiki was with him, walking just by his side, in the staff hallway more over. A part of him had started to believe that maybe people were looking at him because they didn’t really want him there. That, or maybe because they never really thought that they would see Yamada again.
As they finally managed to get out from the mansion, to the pond’s direction, Yamada finally could breathe at ease. Another more minute inside with everyone staring at him would definitely send his nerves on edge.
“Your mum called,” Daiki mumbled.
“She did?”
He didn’t really want to talk about his mum at all, but they were walking on the pathway to the pond, just the two of them, and maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much to talk a little about his mum. Besides, she called. Maybe it was something good.
“To your phone, not mine. Sorry for answering but you weren’t there.”
“It’s okay…” Yamada answered, not liking the sudden change of atmosphere.
Daiki paused for awhile, seemingly to think of what to say to Yamada, making Yamada all more curious than he already was. It got him confused at the end when Daiki actually stop, looking straight at Yamada, hesitation clearly was plastered all over his face.
“She said she’d pick you up tonight after she came back from work.”
“I don’t want to go home just yet,” Yamada answered firmly.
“It wasn’t that. She wants to come for some other reason.”
Okay, now what?
“… your dad wants to see you.”
Eh?!
