So here I am, in 2009, writing in my journal because I said I would. I'm in my living room watching an NFL playoff game between Miami and Baltimore. Actually, let me correct that. I am on the computer and Whitney is watching the game. I don't really care about NFL football unless the Steelers are playing. My loyalty to the Pittsburgh team stems from the fact that I grew up in Steelers Country, but it's also because Ben Roethlisberger looks just like my brother David. So I'm just enjoying a relaxing Sunday with football in the background and the laptop on the ottoman.
I like watching football with Whitney. He is happy when I show any interest in the game and that encourages me to actually watch it. He explains the game as it goes on so when I see something I know what it is (or at least I can now tell what is good and what is bad). He does this with baseball too. So rather than expecting me to know everything, or worse, treating me like an idiot, he simply enjoys watching me learn. Also, if I make an educated comment, he finds it adorble. :)
We have the same general relationship with things like Project Runway or any "style" type knowledge. At first he was just bored with it because he didn't know anything about it. But as we watched it together, he'd ask questions and I'd explain why a certain color gives balance to the design or what this person was trying to accomplish with this design. And then he'd begin to have opinions and tastes that were his own and make comments, which I in turn, find adorable. :)
So in the end, I enjoy watching the Steelers and the Cardinals play and he loves Tim Gunn. A match made in heaven.
Happy Sunday.
P.S. Here is a picture of Ben Roethlisberger, the quaterback for the Steelers and next to it is David, my brother, at Beth's wedding. I think my case is made...
