Why Do What You Do? . . . 1 corinthians 15:58

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 corinthians 15:56-58

No work done in the name of Jesus is wasted in light of eternal glory and reward. I was talking to a friend about what motivates me, what is our motivation for what we do, and it boils down to this - - God knows not only the things that we do, but also the reason (my personal motivation) behind why I do it - - so if my motive is self-serving in that I'm doing it to please myself, or to draw the attention of others, or to have them think I'm a good guy, or even if it is a really good thing (from a societal viewpoint) but it fails to glorify God, then it falls short . . . in other words it misses the mark . . . but the scripture above reminds me that my labor that abounds in the "work of the Lord" is not in vain. I look forward to receiving the reward from my Audience of One, to hear Him say "well done, good and faithful servant" - - to be known as the faithful servant of the Most High God in eternity, it doesn't get much better than that.
