I was thinking about something earlier... when I listen to songs, like most people, I'd imagine, I tend to enjoy especially those songs with lyrics in the first person that I can relate to. I'd wager that this is the category of music that most people prefer: could you be that narrator?
But then I realized that there is another type of song that I love just as much. It's perspective, really. Imagine a song about a breakup. There's the singer, who's lamenting the breakup, and the person they're singing about, or in some cases, singing to. First instinct is to relate to the narrator, the singer. But then, what if the situation fits your life perfectly, yes, only you're the other character? Does that make sense? Like the song was written for you, instead of by you. You listen to a song, and realize, man, it's like they're singing to me/about me/about us.
Think, for example, of Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want". There's a couple different characters you can be.
I love songs of this second variety, where you're the object and not the narrator. Anyone else ever feel this way? I feel special, like the song was written for me... unfortunately, these songs never make good away messages, since everyone assumes you're speaking as the narrator.
But yeah. Just thoughts...
P.S. My basketball team is (clearly) better than yours.
