My summer in Santa Cruz has been surprisingly pleasant so far. I did the first session of summer school to be absolutely sure that I could graduate in March. I thought about doing the second session, but I decided to work full time to save up for DC in the fall. That is probably the smartest decision that I have made in a while since I've made $540 in tips this past week! Sometimes I think about the possibility of being that gay waiter for the rest of my life since it's easy fucking money, but then I realized that making that much money isn't worth tolerating the customers who tip poorly, ask really stupid questions, and insist on always being right.
Anyway, lately all I have been doing is working, smoking like it's 2006, and reading whenever my brain isn't too fried from either/a combination of the two. I'm mostly reading fiction books to take a break from all the environment/international development/social justice books I've read this year, and I'm enjoying them a lot. I've been meaning to read Life of Pi for a few years and I'm finally getting around to it.
Two weeks ago I had an interview with one of the Peace Corps offices in DC and thought I did well, but didn't get the gig. I was getting stressed out about not having an internship when my flight was almost a month away. Luckily, I got an email from another Peace Corps office that said my information was forwarded to them, so they decided to give me an interview. When I spoke with them it turned out that my interests matched theirs more closely than the other office's interests, and two hours later I was offered an internship. I'll be working with the Peace Corps Office of Returned Volunteer Services, which means I'll mostly be doing research on how Peace Corps returnees felt about their experience abroad, how Peace Corps volunteers perceived the people in their host country (and, conversely, how the people in the host country perceived the Peace Corps volunteers), and how returnees are educating the public about their experiences. I'm not expecting too much out of it because I know I'll be doing a lot of typical intern duties (getting coffee, making copies, entering data, helping plan events), but I'm stoked. Especially since I'll be turning 21 two days after I arrive in DC!
