Summary: Where do the Winchesters go when it's all over?

So in the end, the Winchesters made a deal.

Or rather, they got one.

Nobody is too clear on the hows and whys or even whos, but apparently somebody thought that they deserved better than what they got. Which was a gruesome, painful death involving lots of broken bones and bleeding gashes in the middle of nowhere.

And so each Winchester gets another chance, gets just a little of what they always wanted, just enough to tease them, just enough to teach them.

Sam lives a life of picket-fences, small-town girlfriends and happy families.

Whatever orchestrated this has a twisted sense of humor, and it shows in the small things.

It certainly is no coincidence that Sam’s name ends up being Dean here, and that this time around, he is the big brother always watching out for a younger sibling.

Or that this time around when the interesting new guy, who’s in town for only a few months, gets the girl, he’s on the other side of things, the losing side.

That this time the Jess in his life is a guy and somebody he hates.

That this time he gets to marry the pretty, blonde girl and learns that it’s not happily ever after even if she doesn’t burn on the ceiling.

If you had asked John what he wanted most when he was still John, he probably would have told you that he wanted Mary back, that he wanted for all of this to never have happened. That he wanted a normal life for himself and his family.

There are no real do overs, though. Not even here.

Besides, it’s not true.

And so John finds himself in a life passing for normal, again in love with a pretty blonde woman (like son like father) - but this time around, he is the one who dies, and she is the one left behind to try and live the rest of her life without him.

Dean is the hardest.

Because he is the most fucked up of the Winchesters.

You see, as much as his father and his brother only chose this life out of sheer desperation and a burning need for vengeance, Dean kind of likes it.

Not the women burning on the ceilings, the grief, the losses, of course.

But he likes to help people, he likes being close to his family, and he likes hunting.

He’s good at it.

Yes, he wishes he could have all of this without the two people he loves most in life having had to lose what they loved most.

So this is what he gets. With a twist.

And so Dean studies and trains and follows orders and becomes the perfect little soldier all over again, with his brothers and sisters right next to him. And they will never leave him because they are just as different as he is.

What’s life without spice, though, right?

And that’s why this time around, while Sam is Big Brother Dean, Dean is the one who feels responsible for the death of a woman he loved and who has to ask himself if he is destined to become a murderer.

As I said, it shows in the details.

You know, of course, who’s always in the details, right?
