Day Twelve - Seven again (Dean)
PG, Gen, Disclaimer on
main page They are somewhere north of Tango, Arizona when Dean pisses off the wrong witch - again - and ends up four and a half feet tall and all of seven years old.
There are some rather painful setbacks - who knew a seven year old had such sharp teeth - but he finally believes that Sam is in fact little Sammy, and after they buy a booster seat they go and hunt the witch down.
Turns out, though, that they can't do much but wait this one out.
Sam is thirty-six, and he really has no idea how to take care of a little boy. For a moment he considers dropping Dean off with Lisa but it is entirely possible that Dean would never speak to him again if he did. And yeah, Sam isn't married but he's pretty sure that if he was, he wouldn't want his wife to see him stuff peas up his own nose, either.
In the end, they spend three weeks doing all the things they never got to do when Dean was seven the first time around. After Dean eats his own body weight in cotton candy and then throws up all over Sam in technicolor, Sam is ready to accept that sometimes there might have been a point to Dad's refusals. Still, it's a lot more fun than Sam would ever have thought possible, and when they go to bed at night he sometimes lies awake and thinks about having kids of his own. He pictures them in the backyard of a yellow clapboard house, playing catch in the sun and teaching them to swim in the pool. No matter how hard he tries, though, they always have Jess' blond curls, and Sam realizes that he will never have children.
When Dean wakes up his forty-year-old self again one morning, Sam swallows down the sudden tightening in the back of his throat and goes out to buy some Miracle-Gro to hide in Dean's duffel.
