Ok, so I am officially three working days away from being done with Wal-mart. May 29th is my last day, then on June 1 I start my new job. I have been with Wal-mart almost 4 years (Jun 25), so leaving is kind of a big deal for me. I was starting to think that I was unemployable anywhere else!
My new job is a part time cook at a home for the adult disabled. I will be responsible for inventory, checking menus and following recipes planned by a dietician, and making seperate food for dietary restrictions. I will also help serve the food, eat dinner with the residents, and help clean up afterwards.
The home is the Kanthak House on the south side of ottawa, just a few blocks away from my house. I want to see how long it takes me to walk there. It will be nice to work so close to home, especially after I have the baby in September. There are 16 residents with varying degrees of mental and physical handicaps. All of them are capable of feeding themselves and taking their own medication, so even the "worst" cases are not too severe. They also all have the ability to walk and perform tasks, and they work at Friendship Village, a place of employment for adults with disabilities.
I think this job will be a good switch for me. Even though it is a little bit less money per hour, the shifts are going to be steady and predictable, and it will be really nice to feel like I am making a difference in peoples' lives instead of just helping them find things on a shelf.
