If it's written well, I personally say the story is successful no matter what it contains--I may not like the content or agree with the message, but if it's written well, I have to give it respect.
I think we write about faith, battle, suffering, and so on because they interest us--there's so many ways to interpret them, so many possible results. It fascinates us to walk through a process of change, to see how someone shifts and changes under pressure. But I don't think those things are required ingredients for a good story, no. Some of the best work I've ever read has been about comparatively small things. :)
