I am so exhausted. My day certainly could have been worse, but it could have been much better as well. I got no sleep last night due to tossing and turning for no apparent reason, I had to be up at 5:30 this morning to get to class on time, I had to deal with rush hour traffic going through the tunnel under the James River (Why do people seem to think speed limit of 55 means go 70 most of the time and 25 through the tunnel?), and then I had annoying parents. The kids were fine and some of the parents were great but others I could do without. When I did make it through the day, I had to actually get back home and traffic was so much worse tonight than it was in the morning rush. I think it took me about an hour and fifteen minutes this morning and over two hours tonight. I finally gave up, exited the highway, and went to an IHOP to wait for traffic to die down. Nothing like breakfast for dinner and no cooking to make me feel a bit better :)
I had to do a little bit of last minute prep work tonight for my class tomorrow. Amazingly enough, my prep work gave me a much needed smile after my day. I was flipping through the workbook for my middle schoolers to look at the lesson I'll be teaching tomorrow. Some of the stuff in the workbook we do in class and some lessons they do entirely at home. As I was flipping, I noticed a lesson I've never looked at before because they do it entirely at home. The lesson is on context clues and showing them how to use the general meaning of a sentence to figure out a rough definition of a word they don't know. The example sentence?
Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors.
What do you think class? Can you find context clues in that sentence to help you create a rough definition of craning?
Before anyone asks, yes they cite J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chapter 1.
