Random Morning Five
1.) I was just in bed for 13 hours straight. Dang. I went to bed last night at 10:00, immediately after Grey's Anatomy (Woah! I need next week's show NOW!). I didn't fall asleep until like 11:00, but just laying in bed was very nice. When my alarm went off at 8:00 to get my butt out of bed to go volunteer at the elementary school, I realized that I didn't feel well. My throat was really scratchy and painful and I had a headache. So I pulled out the little calendar thing they gave me to get the school's phone number to call and say I wasn't coming in (just the headache and I probably would have gone anyway but the throat worried me that I might have something contagious). According to the calendar, today is a Teacher Workday and the kids don't have school. Good thing I didn't feel well or I would have gone up there for no reason. Instead, I went back to bed with a clear conscience and finally got up at 11:11 and my throat no longer hurt and the headache was better, but still lingering.
2.) I just realized: my birthday is three weeks from yesterday. How'd that happen?
3.) With valentine's Day come and gone, I need a new LJ color scheme/background image. I'm debating between something St. Patty-ish and something general celebration. In the first half of March, ignoring the various members of my large extended family who have birthdays, anniversaries, etc. and just going immediate circle:
- March 3: ladybracknell's Birthday
- March 4: wildmagelet's Birthday
- March 4: My Parent's Wedding Anniversary
- March 8: My Birthday
- March 9: My friend Bill's Birthday
That's a lot of stuff to celebrate. Anybody got any specific suggestions for the layout?
4.) I was in the middle of typing this and my computer suddenly flashed a blue screen with white text that I didn't have time to read. All I caught was the word "problem" then my computer turned itself off and back on. Everything seems to be fine now, but I'm a bit concerned.
5.) I had a bit of a mental breakthrough yesterday and I think I get the Populists and the Progressives! I'm very excited about this. Very. Much more so than most sane humans would consider reasonable. Good thing I never made any particular claims to sanity.
Harry Potter Friday Five (technically ganked from various people on the flist but really from
hp_fridayfive)
1. If you could pick one director (living or dead) to direct a Potter film, who would it be and which film would they make?
I really don't know. I like what Cuaron did with PoA and wouldn't mind seeing him do another one, provided he promises not to cut something as important as the MWPP exposition. Other than that… how about Steven Spielberg for Deathly Hallows? He can do big blockbuster and special effects… he can do major emotion (think Schindler's List)… I guess I could see it. Of course, that's a decision made with no knowledge of the actual content of the book/movie.
2. How old were you when you first got into Harry Potter?
19 exactly. I got the first book as a birthday present after having spent a few months saying I really should try them sometime to see if they were worth all the hype that surrounded the release of the fourth book. I think my friend really just wanted me to shut up and stop saying that. If she did just want me to shut up about Harry Potter, I think she must have been rather disappointed by the results.
3. Choose another fandom and sort the main characters into Hogwarts houses.
Somebody over at the Friday Five community did John (G), Paul (S), George (R), and Ringo (H). For some reason I'm very amused by this. Very.
I suppose I'll do Star Wars because, well, that's what y'all expect, ain't it? I debated doing some of the non-specified characters from HP, just to be contrary but decided not to do so, largely because the flist is fairly likely to randomly debate on those anyway. I debated doing Highlander (TV series not movies), but I'm not sure how many of y'all know the characters from Highlander and as fun as it would be as a thought exercise, it's not as much fun if no one can/will debate any of it with me. For the same reason, I'm only doing main Star Wars original trilogy characters, though I am letting what I know from the comics, novels, and prequel trilogy influence my answers.
Luke: Gryffindor.
Leia: Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. I suppose Gryffindor since I probably shouldn't break up this Trio.
Han: Gryffindor.
Chewie: Hufflepuff (I know breaking up Han and Chewie is a criminal offense, but that's part of why Chewie is such a 'puff. His character is defined entirely by his loyalty to Han).
R2-D2: Ravcenclaw.
C-3P0: Tough one. I don't want to break up Artoo and Threepio, but Threepio isn't much of a Ravenclaw and Artoo totally is. Perhaps they should both be Hufflepuff because of their loyalty to each other?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ravneclaw or Hufflepuff.
Yoda: Ravenclaw.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader: Tough one, actually. I suppose the gut instinct is Slytherin because all bad guys must be Slytherin, right? Too facile. I'd say Hufflepuff. The defining moments of his life, his fall and his redemption, were both motivated, for good or ill, by love and devotion to someone else.
Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine: He really is Slytherin.
4. What's your favorite Gryffindor moment in the series?
Neville standing up to the Trio in Stone. And his little shocked face in the movie when Dumbledore gives him the points is priceless.
5. Do you foresee Harry reuniting with Sirius, his parents, and Dumbledore in Book 7 in some way?
Oh, probably. Definitely depending on how broad/vague is the working definition of "in some way."
