- I read Curse of Chalion this weekend. I thought it started a bit too slowly (or more accurately, was good for the first couple of chapters and then dragged for a few chapters), but really picked up in the latter half. Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It didn't really compel me to want to pick up the sequels and continue exploring the universe, though. Perhaps that's just because I'm under the impression that the sequels focus on different characters and I was more interested in the characters than the universe. I wanted to be interested in the universe, particularly the role of the Gods and Goddesses, but there wasn't enough to get me into it.
For all of you who love Caz, I highly recommend you read Michael Stackpole's DragonCrown War saga. There is a prequel (read it first) and a trilogy. The prequel is a more tightly-focused first person story while the trilogy is more epic fantasy with a larger cast of characters. One of the main characters is an older, physically and emotionally damaged man who is silently fighting for what he knows is right even if the rest of the world is set against him. He also happens to have a thing going with a warrior princess he first met when he was 16 and she was an infant. How can that not appeal to all you Remus and Caz fangirls? I really think this series (in order: Dark Glory War, Fortress Draconis, When Dragons Rage, and Grand Crusade) is the best short fantasy series I've read. - I did laundry today. Apparently laundry requires intense concentration and I can't handle it if I get distracted in the middle of it. I took a load out of the dryer and put it in my bag. I moved the next load from the washer to the dryer and then carried the bag upstairs to dump out the finished load and grab a new load to wash. I got a phone call in the middle of this process. When I got off the phone, I carried the bag downstairs and only after I'd put about half the clothes in the washer did I realize they were inexplicably warm. Inexplicable until I realized it was the load I'd just taken out of the dryer, anyway.
- Tonight is a Spurs basketball game. It is the playoffs and the Spurs are one game from elimination in their current series. We have to win the next three in a row or we're out. Uh oh!
- Thursday, a friend will be in from out of town and I'm going to do something with him and the colonial book group (collection of professors and grad students who meet once a month to discuss some hot new book in the field) meets in the evening. I was not at all impressed with the book this time and I'm concerned how the discussion will go since one of my friends worked with the author while she was getting her BA and MA and she really likes him. Hopefully either she'll take my criticisms of his book in stride or she won't come.
- Friday, I have the usual volunteering at the elementary school in the morning, an HGSA meeting in the afternoon, and (I think) a meeting with two potential roommates in the evening. I've been communicating with these two girls who are friends via email for a few days and if all goes well at the meeting we'll probably start trying to find a three bedroom place.
- Sunday I can't eat anything all day and then in the evening I have to drink some nasty gunk that will make me spend the rest of the day in the bathroom, then I have to get up really early Monday and drink more of the gunk to spend more time in the bathroom so I can then have someone knock me unconscious and shove a camera up my butt. This entire process is somewhat euphemistically called a colonoscopy and is clearly not one of my favorite activities. Ah, the joys of having a chronic intestinal disorder.
- Tuesday (assuming no complications on Monday), I'm meeting with someone at the library to discuss volunteering. I got the impression I'm not going to be doing as much as I wanted to do, but we'll see. Then I have to proctor my roommate's final exam for her because she is having minor surgery on Monday (it is medical procedure day for our apartment) and can't do it herself.
That's all I can think of for now. I think I've got more appointments and commitments in the next week than I've had in the past month.
