W&M and FanFic
I canceled class for tomorrow which basically means the next time I have to be someplace is class on Tuesday and the next time I really need to do something is write a lecture on Monday. I spent today resting. In regards to the student protests going on around campus, I think the protests might be helpful in the sense of convincing the powers that be that ignoring student opinion in the future is not a good idea but I don't think there is even the slightest chance that things will change in regards to the current situation. I feel like I should leave the protesting in this specific situation to those with the passion and the hope to believe they might actually be able to change something with Nichol.
Since I have the luxury of essentially having a five day weekend (counting today), I really want to get something done on the fic front. I've spent some time this evening looking over all the communities I've been able to find and I've narrowed things down to my top five.
2x5obsessions
You pick two pairings from two completely different fandoms and a set of five prompts for each of the fandoms. So that's ten fics total but in two fandoms. That could be good since I was worried about burnout. The big problems with this one are Remus/Tonks is currently taken and the mods appear to be MIA since no claim requests made since June have been approved.
album_mix
This is very different from most of the challenges. You pick any musical album (single, LP, CD, compilation, soundtrack, single artist, whatever) and write a fic for each track on your selected album. So the total number of fics written completely depends on what album you select. Also, you don't have to pick any fandom or pairing. So if one track inspires me to write a Star Wars fic and the next one inspires something Harry Potter, that is completely fine. I know what artist I would pick, I'd just have to decide between the five albums of his I have, which could be tough since my favorite songs are spread out across all of them. Again, the mods appear to be MIA but it is more recent since only claims made since November haven't been approved.

This one is almost the opposite of album_mix. You pick a specific claim (fandom and character/pairing/group/whatever) and any 12 songs in the entire world and write a fic about your selected character(s) for each song. A fringe benefit of this one right now would be that picking the songs may help me pick ones for the five by five favorite artists/songs meme that mrstater tagged me to do. Yet again, the mods are MIA and haven't approved any claims made since October.

They have four or five different prompt lists, all of them with one prompt for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. You pick specific characters and a prompt list and write your 26 fics. As is apparently the norm, the mods are MIA and haven't approved claims since June.
1sentence
They have fifty prompts. You pick a pairing and write one sentence for each of the prompts which sounds very challenging and interesting. The big problem is that both my favorite couples (Remus/Tonks and Luke/Mare from Star Wars) are currently taken.
I realize with all of these that there is nothing to prevent me from doing it on my own without signing up, or with attempting to sign up but not waiting to hear back from missing mods before starting to work. But somehow doing it unofficially doesn't sound as much fun and I think signing up helps make sure I'll finish. At 1sentence they actually say they encourage you to write your sentences before claiming and post immediately after your claim is approved so that someone else isn't stuck waiting for a claim to be completed and released (like I am for both my fav couples). So I'm seriously considering spending tomorrow trying to write the 50 sentences for at least one of my two pairs and just waiting until they are freed to go make a formal claim and then post. I'm also considering going through music and submitting a claim for one of the two music based ones. I'm willing to wait a bit to see if the mods come back and approve claims. If they don't, I might just start posting the fics here.
