I'm back! Yesterday I was all like, "yeah! I'm going home" and then when I got home late last night, I realized that it's hell week for Kindergarten and we're actually leaving for Scotland really soon. And that I had to get up ungoodnessly early to open the shop this morning. But, guess what? I love my job. No, really, I love my job.
It was a really good week at Bethesda. My camper's name was Tommy and I think he's my favourite so far (Shh, don't tell!). The other churches we went with were great (I had low expectations: one was a group of all girls-ugh, and the other was a group of seven boys and one girl, all going into 9th grade). More than that, though, I really loved the group we took from my church. I brought Clara with us and she's a dear (when she's not being completely exasperating) and there were no preppy girls for Laura to gravitate towards. I adore Laura, really, she's wonderful, but when she's around preppy girl types, she changes and isn't as cool, but this week it was just me, Thomas, Clara, Katie, Lori, and a bunch of ninth grade boys (some of whom are darling, some of whom are insufferably immature).
The pastor from another church (Mark) was my prayer partner for the week and it was amazing. Really, really amazing. Ooh! Be proud of me. I practiced my lines and went running while I was gone.
My camper, Thomas Kauffman, was nonverbal and wheelchair-bound. He is amazingly sweet and blows kisses/will kiss your hand. He's really close to another camper named Shelly and they hold hands and she'll get all excited and say over and over, "Tommy kissed me!" It's really darling. When he didn't want to colour his craft, Shelly helped-they both held the marker together and I moved the paper plate mask underneath. Absolutely adorable.
On the downside, Tommy eats really slowly, can be kind of stubborn, and is not usually easy to engage in the planned activities. Also, he had a seizure (I think from the heat) and that was really scary for me. It wasn't a crazy awful seizure, but it did scare me, and he wasn't quite himself for the rest of the day.
Clara + Laura (off medication) + Elizabeth = absolutely wonderful insanity akin to the Three Stooges. Anecdotes of camp activities will be happily provided upon request.
My back hurts so badly I can feel the muscles around my shoulder blades burning. *growls* Where is Dominique when I need him? My legs are really bruised and scraped up too. And it's laundry day, so I'm wearing a sports bra and it hurts. Boohiss!
Happy birthday to Scott and Tim today and Sarah yesterday! Scott's having a partyish thing here tonight; I can't wait to see him. ^___________^
