Jonathan Trumbull Hine
HINE, Jonathan Trumbull Jonathan Trumbull Hine, 88, of Sill Ln., Old Lyme died Friday, (March 30, 2007) at Bridebrook Healthcare Center, Niantic. Mr. Hine was Born on November 21 1918 in Berkeley, CA the son of Thomas Buck Hine PhD. Chemist. Inventor of the smoke screen in World War I and Faith Lanman Hine, daughter of Charles Rockwell Lanman, Professor of Sanskrit and author/editor of Harvard's Oriental Series. After his father's death in 1926, Grandfather Lanman (who was born and raised in Norwich) played a large role in his childhood while growing up in Cambridge, MA. Mr. Hine graduated from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, MA. He attended Harvard University with the class of 1940 before gaining appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1941.
Because of the outbreak of World War II, the class of 1941 graduated in January. Jonathan was assigned to the USS West Virginia (BB-48), in Pearl Harbor, HI. He spent December 7th 1941, in oil-soaked waters, helping rescue fellow sailors. In the aftermath of the attack, he was assigned to a land-based decoding position but soon volunteered for submarine duty. After several patrols he attended the Submarine School in Groton. Before the war ended he performed 13 submarine patrols. He was proud to have served on the original USS Narwhal (SS-176) as Gunnery Officer. In spite of the horror of the Pearl Harbor attack, and having spent most of World War II in combat, what he recalled as being his most worthy effort and of which he was most proud occurred during the Korean War. As part of the Inchon Landing, he organized flotillas of Japanese and American landing craft to evacuate women and children from the fighting. He was Executive Oficer of USS The Sullivans (DD-537) during the Suez crisis in 1954/55 patrolling the Suez Canal. He returned again in 1956 on routine deployments.
It was during this time that he met his wife Janet Simpson from Cambridge, England. They were married in the Unitarian Church in Cambridge in August 1957. While serving at the Potomac River Naval Command in Washington, D.C. he oversaw the participation of the PT-109 in the Presidential Inaugural Parade of President Kennedy John F. Kennedy (a Harvard classmate.)
He retired from active duty in 1961 and went to work as a civilian contractor with the Philco/Ford Corporation in the antenna branch of the U.S. Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory at Fort Trumbull in New London. He joined the Civil Service in the same capacity and worked at the Naval Underwater Systems Center until his retirement from Civil Service before the Naval Underwater Warfare Center as it is now known moved to Newport, RI. He then worked as a technical editor at McLaughlin Corporation in Waterford for another 15 years. As a volunteer Mr. Hine served for many years on the board of the SE CT Hearing and Speech Center. After his final retirement, gave many hours to Friends of Harkness Memorial State Park and later served as Treasurer for the Friends of Connecticut State Parks and also to the Duck River Garden Club of Old Lyme. Working outdoors and on behalf of the environment gave him enormous satisfaction.
Besides Jan, his wife of almost 50 years, Jonathan is survived by three sons, Charles Lanman Hine (wife, Kim Farnsworth) of Wethersfield, William Thomas Hine of New London, and John Simpson (Jack) Hine (wife, Allison) of Old Lyme, and their gift of dear grandchildren, Isabella and Leland. Mr. Hine is also survived by two sons of his first wife, Carrie Curtis, Jonathan T Hine Jr (wife, Carol) of Charlottesville VA., and grandson Daniel, also of Charlottesville. His second son, David L. Hine (wife, Sally) of Nonington, Kent, England and their children, Joseph, Samuel, Matthew, Sarah, James, Jeremy, Nathan, Corwin, Clara and Leandra as well as (almost) seven great-grandchildren.
