The need for multiple baskets
The current and ongoing AO3 outage is a harsh but good reminder of why it's a bad idea to store your fics (for example) in only a single location--it's the same reason I have a (long overdue for an update) WordPress site for (old, at the moment) for fic as well as a Dreamwidth account mirroring this LiveJournal.
Yes, a single central database, especially one with all the tags and filters and other bells and whistles, is incredibly convenient, but if it should break or disappear for some reason ... hoo boy is it painful. Not just for the individuals publishing fic on it, but also for their readers, who now have nowhere to go for alternate copies if they didn't think to save their favorite fics.
Yes, updating across multiple platforms is annoying (see: that Wordpress site that's several years out of date), but it's a good guard against the current scenario.
