The clock ticking reminds me of going to visit the Lancashire couple who looked after my mum when she was evacuated during the war - they didn't have a grandfather clock but it did have a proper tick and chimed the quarters. They had a coal fire too, in winter.

I long for a proper indoor fireplace--we have a large firepit/stone hearth in the backyard which is excellent in warmer weather, but winter is too cold and wet around here to be able to enjoy it. Alas, I have to make do with a digital fire. Nicer than nothing at all, but definitely a bit lacking in the warmth department!
